GOP Senators Applaud Tariffs by Trump as Negotiating Tool for Border Security

U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 30-day pause on tariffs against both Canada and Mexico have halted – at least for now – a continental trade war that economists on both sides of the border warn would raise prices. Many Republican lawmakers have stayed silent on the president’s tariff agenda – caught between risking Trump’s ire and backlash from constituents concerned about rising costs. With a temporary reprieve in place, however, some Republicans expressed their support for Trump’s actions. Sen. Josh Hawley voiced his approval, stating, “Oh yeah, it was great. Look at what we got out of it in relatively short order.” Sen. Ted Cruz also expressed his support for Trump’s use of tariffs as a bargaining chip, stating that it would help secure America’s borders.
