Town on Trial is a compelling British crime drama directed by John Guillermin, featuring John Mills in the lead role as Superintendent Mike Halloran. With its moody cinematography, intricate characters, and exploration of themes such as morality and prejudice, Town on Trial offers a tense and thought-provoking mystery.
John Mills delivers a nuanced performance as the determined detective, anchoring the film’s dark exploration of human nature beneath the façade of civility. The movie is a gripping whodunit that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats as they try to unravel the mystery alongside Halloran.

Way too many commercials. Bye bye for now.
The lady that was killed always gets a bad rap. Women jealous and instead of knowing their worth they blame the other female. Men that are caught up with the drama of getting a pretty woman aren't worth their salt. Don't despise beauty or ugliness. Be thankful of your own life.
A very fine film. Rather salacious for 1957, but trends in Britain were once a few years ahead of the states. I was a young boy then, but admire the way people took care of themselves and behaved in public. Behind doors is another story. Well filmed with great acting. I realized "who-done-it" at a third the way through. The storyline kept my attention. I must watch too many of these. Ha, ha. Charles Coburn was the model of dignity.
Thank you for finding and posting this film.
It's summer for eveyone except John Mills, who foes through the film in a trench coat!
Why do some of the actors speak with a British accent and some speak with an American accent?
John Mills was fascinating. But It's the super short, tennis shorts with buns showing; that set the level of Hitchcock atmosphere. A goodie.
had me fooled to the utmost end, still don't know how this guy was the culprit………
Good plot but detectives wore no gloves in the apt.
the way they treat the crime scene, coppers today would have a fit.
the inspector running around in a trench coat while people are in swimsuits?? the character reminds me of Seinfeld's library cop,
Mill's character's scripted social comments and insights for the time are interesting and well and convincingly acted
Molly looks as though she played the tennis match forgetting to put on her dress.
Put any doubts you may have aside, and watch this movie. Sir John Mills at his best. It is ironic that Barbara Bates (Mill's love interest in this movie) was herself mentally unstable and committed suicide at the age of 43.
STUPID ENDING

Ratbag drivers🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh boy, the ads are cruel. Love John Mills. Cheers Rosemary Western Australia 74yrs
Very Hitchcockie from time to time. I love the camera angles. John Mills is all that. Great movie.
I like John Mills. This side of him was great.
The director clearly loves filming police cars coming to a halt.
Verse from Bible does not exist especially not in Genesis when talking about Abraham. The verse may have inspired by Ezekiel Chapter 23, but the verse is not exactly true at all.
As an American, especially from the south in Texas, I sometimes have trouble following British films. But this little gem is a definite exception, and, in fact, one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Great story and even better actors. 👏
Great movie, suspenseful to the end! Lots of commercials every few minutes though-:(
1956. Rationing was over. It still drizzled every day. Confiscatory marginal taxation meant that a police inspector got about as rich as anyone – hence Morse's jaguar 30 years on. But Britain retained its virtue. Murder was distinctly frowned upon. Yet Periodic umbrella shortages caused mad panic.
A film I've always loved, and very grateful for YT directing me to it here (it only comes on UK TV about once a year). There's another gritty JM film called 'The Long Memory' that's very well worth viewing if you've enjoyed this one.
I like Charles Coburn. He was a delightful actor.
In that time, her majesty's pleasure, would have been applied.
LOVE the toast rack, tea coase, the tall lamp .
What a film, what memories of my days gone by, b&b, o bliss, eggs bacon, marmalade, tea, celon of course, with blackbits,
Two galllons of gas (petrol)? I thought they used liters as the gas unit in England.
Damn good movie. I like Sir John playing a tough guy. Most enjoyable, thank you.

Watch Hobson’s Choice, Mills is fantastic in it ❤
Few films deserve the accolade of superb.
This one does.
Relying on flawless cinematography, excellent dialogue, superb acting and peerless direction..this movie shows British film making at its very best.
Settle down for the evening…You are in for a treat.
very good movie. even if it did have charles coburn. (not a fan).John Mills reminds me of Michael Kitchen. Thank you for posting
Good movie 🎬 🎞 🎥 🎦 5 stars 🌟
Great movie! As John Mills might have said, “All in a day’s work.” The only niggling concern was the “Americanisation” of the film. The whole cast was British, apart from the excellent Charles Coburn and Barbara Bates, and the setting was a small English town. The occasional gimmicky camera work and John Mills’s fake mid-Atlantic accent grated a little.
Thank you.
The nurse in the movie is so attractive, its crazy how women could be so appealing and stunning without having to show any skin like they do nowadays, society is digressing not progressing.
Have you ever been to England?
