President Donald Trump has announced that he has directed the Treasury Department to cease minting new pennies due to the rising production costs associated with the one-cent coin. This decision has reignited the passionate debate over the continued existence of the penny and what its discontinuation would mean for the economy.
NBC News’ Brian Cheung delves into the complexities of the penny debate, exploring the various arguments for and against keeping the coin in circulation. One of the main issues at hand is the fact that it costs more to produce a penny than its actual value, leading many to question the practicality of maintaining its production.
The logistics of discontinuing the penny are also a key point of discussion. How would businesses and consumers adjust to a world without pennies? Would prices be rounded up or down? These are important questions that would need to be addressed if the penny were to be phased out.
While some argue that the penny is an essential part of American culture and history, others contend that it is a nuisance that clutters pockets and piggy banks. Trump’s call for a halt in penny production has brought this debate to the forefront once again, prompting lawmakers and economists to weigh in on the issue.
Regardless of the outcome, the debate over the penny is far from over. As the Treasury Department considers Trump’s directive, the future of the one-cent coin remains uncertain. Only time will tell whether the penny will continue to hold its place in American currency or if it will soon become a relic of the past.

First it's the penny. The copper will go to electronics and ev tech and EV vehicles. The nickel next for the same reason. Interesting how the new administration calls it the green new scam as lotus has Elon in his new cabinet who imo is all about the green new scam. All very strange and yet predictable if u watch and observe closely.
Get rid of Daylight Savings next!
The US Mint is a business – they make and SELL the coins to the US Treasury. It is not a loss to the government – it is a loss to the mint, they make up for it with Quarters. GO to a mint tour – ASK these questions and find out the truth for yourself.

In Canada, if you pay digitally, you pay the exact price. If you pay by cash the amount is rounded to the nearest nickle. Nonissue given how few people pay by cash.
I'm bitcoin all day long, so this silliness does not apply to me.

I'm not in favor for Trump but does anyone believe he has a point about Penny production?
Then stop making nickles.
About rounding up the price. Do they round up the retail price? Then, after sales tax, would you round up the sales tax also?
A 99c item would cost $1 + tax. What if the tax doesn't end in 5 or 0? Would you round up the sales tax also?
Pennies have out lived it’s value and purpose
Actually, us kiwis scrapped our 1 cent coin, along with our 2 cent coin, back in the 1980s. We stopped making them in 1987, and then demonitised the coins in 1990. We also scrapped our 5 cent coin in 2006.
On the question of rounding, the US could adopt cash rounding, which is what we use in New Zealand, and what Australians and Canadians use. If the price is $4.97 that gets rounded down to $4.95 when paying with cash, but if it's $4.98 it gets rounded up to $5. Alternatively, if you're using an electronic payment like a debit card, or are paying by cheque, then you're paying the exact price and so no rounding will occur.
