In a surprising turn of events, Germany’s likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has made headlines for his stance on transatlantic relations. Merz, who recently emerged victorious in Germany’s general election, has emphasized the importance of Europe being independent of the United States and boosting its own defenses.
Speaking out against US President Donald Trump, Merz stated that he believes Trump does not care about Europe, signaling a shift in traditional alliances and attitudes towards the US. This bold stance has sparked discussions about the future of German-American relations and the role of Europe in global politics.
Merz’s remarks come at a time of increasing tensions between the US and Europe, particularly on issues such as trade, security, and climate change. As Germany prepares for a new leader who is willing to challenge the status quo in transatlantic partnerships, the international community will be closely watching how these developments unfold.
With Europe potentially forging a more independent path from the US under Merz’s leadership, the dynamics of international diplomacy and alliances are likely to undergo significant changes. As the world awaits the official transition of power in Germany, the implications of this shift in relations with the United States remain to be seen.

The US taxpayers have had enough . Defend yourself .
Well, not long ago, the US paid the Norwegian to blow up their pipelines to deprive them from cheap Russian gas, the worst war aggression against Germany since World War II, Germany and Europe have always been alone, they're just coming to realization. The US never cared about any other countries security issues, that's pure nonsense.
American here. My suggestion is for Germany and all western aligned European countries to isolate USA. We are headed to autocracy and it's disturbing.
Its hilarious listening to a European, especially a German, lecture the US on democratic principles.
Does turning against America include expelling 50,000+ US troops in Germany?
Europe will fall and burn..if their political policies and their leaders don’t change …and it’s good to know that they are not going to depend on America to save them..on your own..America will be fine with Trump..MAGA..
People forget, Europe literally cannot go it alone. Europe has underinvested in defense for 30 years. While the US has been sharing it's heavily subsidized technology with Europe. There's literally no way Europe can catch up technologically.
Finally the Europeans have woken up that their strategy of ripping off American tax payers is no longer an option.
The Germans are very good at going to war , just not very good at winning .
Sounds like a teenager threatening their father with growing up and taking care of theirselves.
Trump is making all of its allies turn against the USA. Canada still loves Germany and all of the EU members!
Isn't this a similar situation to WWII?
In term of the countries and the bands (not the reasons)
People need to calm down. A year from now we'll be back being friends again.
I find it rather laughable to hear Spohr's response to Weidel's comment, "nobody takes Germany seriously". While Weidel's comment may be rather flippant, I would ask Spohr how she would explain the absence of Germany at the negotiating table with USA and Russia if not because Germany isn't being taken seriously. Trump not only made the remark that Europe wasn't welcome, but he's negotiating an arrangement with Russia including for the USA to take ownership of Ukraine's mineral wealth, without the slightest regard to Europe. If the USA doesn't consider Europe important, why is he negotiating with Russia and taking over Ukraine's minerals? Both of these developments are rather incredible.
Just remember everyone, Trump made the USE VS Canada hockey game all about him and he lost, as he usually does when he makes things about him. My warning to everyone. If he is making something not related to him, about him. Be prepared that it may fall apart and take precautions.
NATO aside, Trump is alienating much of the free world, so yes, most Europeans are turning against the US, and this sentiment will be deeply rooted
Peace to Ukraine!
Blackrock Merz is eager to get to midnight in Europe
Germans dusting off their grandfathers Hugo Boss uniforms right now…
Germany is compromised on needing oil from russia. They decommissioned their clean energy and are using russian oil. If russia cuts sales, they will freeze…
Merz is far right
America is far right.
There's no bad blood.
"Is Germany turning against the US?" Well, it wouldn't be the first time—and both times, it didn’t end well for Germany, even if this would be a different kind of confrontation. The US is so large that each individual state of the Union could be considered its own country. It could function independently if necessary, though it won’t take that path. This is just a shift in the chessboard left over from WWII and the Cold War.
As for Europe, it's hardly a club of friends, and it certainly won't stay united in a confrontation with the US. Germany isn’t particularly beloved in Europe either—any misstep from it would provoke backlash. So far, other nations have tolerated Germany only because it has been Europe’s economic engine and cash generator. Once that advantage is gone, so is what little goodwill remains.
Merz, like Starmer has a very weak victory. This is not the party of old. Imagine if he alliances with member of the previous government, everybody would be a loser!
I don't know if Trump intended this, but Europe is finally waking up. During his first term, Trump warned Germany and Europe against buying energy from Russia and urged them to increase defence spending.
No. The US turned against the world.
America has made a decision to elect an untrustworthy felon President who intends to use US Military and economic prowess to extort any other State… evil/good has no consideration. Every negotiation/transaction is about greed.
Because US wants isolation the world should isolate US economically.
Talk is cheap.
Germany and other European nations should increase NATO spending from 2% to 10% if they truly want security from Russia.
Who cares 😂
The United States gas gone nuts under Donald Trump's administration. I think he's going to be arrested with or without his consent. I Think so and Vance and the others. The US is in a terrible mess.
How much of European aid is in the form of loans being paid by the interest in the $300 billion of seized Russian assets? I'm sure some of the US aid is loans too, but I don't know.
We been warning yall about the US and yall called us Putin Apologists. The same will
Happen with Taiwan Philippines Japan S Korea and any other ‘all’ That loses a proxy war.
The US blew up the Nordstream lmao. Y’all are DUMMMMM for trusting my country and blindly falling it despite the TONS of evidence and others shouting this out loud.
Germany: We want Europe security
USA: Then increase NATO sending to 5% of GDP
Germany: noooooo was joke bro
🤡
As an american…. we turned on europe. We have a russian asset as a president.
Who knew Merz could be such a tool? Germany is cooked.
Europe will never turn against the U.S. even under Trump the “ Babarian” because they’re weak and need the US.
Americans are tired of paying for German defense when Germany is getting energy from Russia. Pay your fair share. This is not an alliance it’s US protecting Europe.
Glad to see the female professor emphasizing the larger picture, based on values/principles and relationship, and noting that the world is not just transactional.
EU will have to look very hard at its social programs which will be very unpopular if they want a big military as you can't both as the US tax payers are tired of subsidizing your defense.
2 days ago Trump couldn’t recall that there were elections in GER. Now he talks about “highly anticipated elections”. Such a 🤡
Christina is absolutely spot with her comments. Especially where she alludes to the fact that the US, with Canada, Australia, NZ and especially Europe form what is commonly known as "western civilisation". What Trump and through him the US is currently engaged in with his apparent support for Russia (and its very anti-western behaviour) is drive a wedge through that civilisational modus operandi and way of life. That fact alone will make the US weaker in the short to medium term. Remember that the US isn't a superpower because it has the ability to throw its weight around, it's a superpower because Europe accepts that role from the US. That superpower status accrues tremendous wealth from the rest of the world to the US. That will erode over time if Europe is no longer in lock-step with the US.
good for Macron and Trump willing to take a FREE WHEELING questions ! 🙂
* can you imagine Sleepy Joe and or "Cackling" KAMALA in that position ! ? … it would have been embarrassing !
(and where was German Chancellor Merz … nowhere!)
