Patrick Schwarzenegger was in the running to play the Man of Steel in James Gunn‘s highly anticipated “Superman” reboot.
During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, host Josh Horowitz asked Schwarzenegger if he had, “done more than your share of superhero auditions in your career?” Schwarzenegger replied, “No, I haven’t,” before detailing the three superhero characters he’s auditioned for: Homelander from “The Boys,” Golden Boy from “Gen V,” which he went on to land, and Superman.
Schwarzenegger said he didn’t get much further after submitting his self tape, adding, “I don’t think I got any feedback. I think it was like, ‘No, not for you.’”
David Corenswet would be the one to land the titular role in “Superman,” which hits theaters July 11,” and Schwarzenegger would go on to star in “The White Lotus” Season 3. In the Mike White directed HBO drama, Schwarzenegger plays Saxon Ratliff, the cocky, finance bro son of a wealthy Southern family.
Schwarzenegger added that he’s only had two in-person auditions since the pandemic: “The Idea of You,” which he missed out on, and “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez,” in which he played future NFL quarterback Tim Tebow.
Of his Zoom auditions, Schwarzenegger said, “It’s just one person on the screen and when they talk, they’re on it and then you talk and it switches to you. So, it’s really weird doing a scene with someone because sometimes they’ll be mid talk and you say something, and it’ll switch to you and then it’s really distracting and weird.”
