I shopped in Seoul and Taipei, the sizes are all over the place.
I'm a US, S-M and and an XL long sleeve top was too small 😅
Maybe nice accessories – silk scarves or a cool belt – are a nice alternative
What? Binh Tay Market is to district 5 Cho Lon
Huge place
Great that Dan showed you how to navigate the gigantic markets. I personally do not like to buy fake designer goods, but like the small souvenirs and buddhist beads. Not crazy about bargaining either, but looks like fun.
Ben Thanh and Binh Tay markets operate differently. 20yrs ago a tiny 2×2 kiosk at Ben Thanh could go up to 1 billion VND, ($50.000 USD), the same price of a small apt or a small house in an alley way. Imagine that same kiosk in today's price, then you will understand why it's so expensive at Ben Thanh, but restaurants or any shop in district 1 will be double or triple the cost compare to other districts, basically you're paying rents for them.
Most Vietnamese don't shop at Ben Thanh market for prices and the attitudes, but they're still shocked when tourists bargained to like 50% off, and some even said the shirt costs only 1/10 of the price.
On a lighter note, back when Katrina hits New Orleans, Ben Thanh merchants got together and made a big donation, because they had money.
Binh Tay market rents are not so expensive, plus they do wholesales so most of these kiosks are the representative trading posts, they have regular customers buying bulks from Malaysia, Indonesia and around South East Asia and Vietnam. Therefore the small things they sale at Binh Tay is like a past time job, they don't make much profits for the small items.
I love shopping for the miscellaneous stuff, thanks for giving us a tour.
Hi AK. how are you?
Thank you for sharing all your adventures with us..
Enjoy, be safe 😊
The monument in the middle is dedicated to Quách Đàm 郭琰 The Chinese merchant who built the market, lots of stories about him online both in Vietnamese and English. There used to be a bronze statue of him standing in the middle of the white poles dressed in Manchu mandarin gown. After the liberation they took away the statue. The merchants felt bad they made a bust statue to honor him, he had his head half shaved Manchu style, not a monk. If you visit The Fine Art Museum near Ben Thanh you will see this bronze statue. The museum itself is also belonged to another Wealthy Chinese Huỳnh Văn Hoa 黃文華 the first residence in Saigon with elevator.
