The White House doubles tariffs due to Ontario’s “egregious, insulting” energy tax

The White House has announced that President Trump will be doubling tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada, imposing a 50 per cent tariff in response to Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff on electricity imports to the U.S. The White House press secretary called Ford’s decision “egregious and insulting,” claiming that Canada has been taking advantage of the U.S. for decades. Despite concerns about the impact of the trade war, the White House believes the tariffs will benefit the U.S. in the long-term and boost morale among American industries.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced a temporary suspension on the electricity surcharge in response to the White House’s decision to double tariffs. Ford has stated that he will respond appropriately if Trump moves forward with the 50 per cent tariffs, and is set to meet with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick in Washington. The escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada have raised concerns about the impact on both economies and industries, as well as the implications for future trade relations.
