After what was supposed to be an eight-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS), Nasa astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams found themselves embroiled in a nine-month odyssey filled with political propaganda. The duo, along with their Nasa colleague Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, collectively known as Crew 9, finally undocked from the ISS aboard their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule as it passed above the Pacific Ocean.

The journey started on June 5 when they boarded a Boeing Starliner for what was meant to be a routine test flight to the ISS and back. However, technical issues with the spacecraft led Nasa to decide to fly it back empty and extend the astronauts’ mission, allowing them to join their colleagues on the ISS in conducting scientific research.
This unexpected extension has made the return journey all the more awaited for Wilmore and Williams, who have spent close to a year in space. The challenges they faced, including navigating through a politically charged atmosphere while miles above the Earth, highlight the dedication and resilience of these astronauts.
