Is Apple’s $2,000 iPhone Duo Worth It? WSJ’s Week-Long Test Provides Insight
In a bold move to redefine mobile technology, Apple has unveiled its first foldable device: the iPhone Duo. Packed with a tablet-sized display that fits discreetly into your pocket, this innovative smartphone aims to blend the boundaries between work and play. However, with a steep price tag of $2,000, it raises the question: Is it worth the investment? Nicole Nguyen of The Wall Street Journal spent a week testing the iPhone Duo to uncover its merits and limitations.
Using Two Hands or None
The first notable experience of the iPhone Duo revolves around its unique design, necessitating a change in how users interact with their devices. Nguyen highlights the challenge of maneuvering the foldable screen, often requiring the use of both hands, especially when switching between apps or multitasking. However, the Duo also offers a hands-free experience, enabling users to prop it up for video calls or media consumption. This duality presents an interesting juxtaposition: users either fully engage with the device using both hands or enjoy the convenience of hands-free capabilities.
More Play, Less Work
When it comes to functionality, Nguyen found that the iPhone Duo leans more towards entertainment than productivity. The expansive screen is perfectly suited for streaming videos, gaming, and browsing social media but lacks some of the efficiency tools found in traditional smartphones. Users looking for a device that seamlessly transitions from work tasks to leisure activities may find the iPhone Duo’s apps and features leaning heavily towards the playful side of user engagement.
First-Gen Tradeoffs
As with any first-generation product, Nguyen notes the inevitable tradeoffs that come with innovation. The iPhone Duo, while packing impressive features and a stunning display, also exhibits some growing pains typical of new technology. Users may encounter bugs, limited app compatibility, and concerns regarding the durability of the foldable design. These initial setbacks, while expected, may give potential buyers pause as they consider the hefty investment.
In conclusion, the iPhone Duo represents Apple’s ambitious foray into the foldable phone market, offering a combination of cutting-edge technology and convenience. However, as Nguyen’s week-long test reveals, consumers should weigh the device’s playful features against its productivity shortcomings and the tradeoffs typical of a first-generation product before deciding if it’s worth the $2,000 price tag.

It’s too big for just one hand use. Not worth it
It's alotttttttttt more in other countries…. Let's not even think about what it costs in Asian countries. India I am sure will be retailing for $4/5K… Would a phone really be worth it? God help you if you drop it. Hmm I miss the good old Nokia days.
What an annoying reviewer.
iPhones aren't worth their price. in other news: water is wet
Wsj can make a shallow video like this?
I gave up after she complained about an extra .05 pounds being too heavy
She got paid for this.
Where is the hot dog?
https://youtu.be/IjD4SNG6jE8?is=s-0K16POH3fUYMH9
So a heavier phone that needs 2 hands + increase in screen time without any increase in productivity + compromises in hardware & software = Pay $2K+. Did I get it right?
Jack of all trades, master of none
Hmm, but given the small target market, how many app developers would actually sink time and money into optimizing for Duo? 🤔 (Unless Apple subsidizes this effort)
Watching this on a 89 euro Motorola
There is no consumer product worth $2000 anyways lol
At this point I will downgrade my iPhone if/when I break it. The price increases are not worth the differences.
Really nice looking smartphone
Another iflop
I agree I think it’s far too wide and heavy just can’t see the purpose of it
Excellent information all the other bloggers/influencers will ignore. Great review!
15 Pro Maxでできない何に2,000ドル払うのか。同じ予算をClaudeやChatGPTに使う方が、今のiPhoneでできることが増えると思う。
Apple's traditional marketing strategy. This time through WSJ. As though they invented a folding phone and these features were not available before! Whoa!
This is the kind of videos that I loved. Honest, review on a quick and short video and clear explanation with real examples. Here’s my like and you have a new subscriber.
Something like this is better to wait a few models until after they better refine it.
Great review, WSJ 😊
Love this review. Most other Duo reviews talked about the features. What matters is how it fits in your life, especially weight and what it’s like in the hand. Brava!
It seems she has just submitted her assignment to her supervisor lol 😂
Credit to those who came first, but innovation isn’t just about timing. Quality and user experience matter just as much. Let’s see what Apple brings to the table. 😉
As an app developer I was NOT aware, that reviewers get it a week early aka. we scheduled our app to be released 1 day before the Duos release
-> I'm sure plenty of apps will be updated around the 23rd
Btw, to you as a Creator, our app Marker for Creators saves you tons of time in editing, and as of today, it's also perfectly optimized for the Duo 😉.
Two devices, two batteries: £1,500. One foldable trying to be both: £1,999. The Duo is lovely, but that’s still £500 for the privilege of folding.
This will flop so hard
This is gonna be the cool gadget in a couple of years that will be brought up again and again why nobody used these because theyre so cool in concept but I doubt it will sell a lot due to current circumstance
You are in a track suit (grotesque for WSJ content) , surely your strong hands can handle extra 1.87 oz? Joanna got her own channel, i'd go there for quality tech reviews
The Duo is amazing device Apple did a great job as usual
Heavy is bad.
📌Why is it so hard for reviewers to just say out loud what they feel inside,,,,that the Samsung Fold 8 is superior.🙏🏻
This Apple Duo is a complete mess.
a whole video about what iPhone Duo is NOT? what a waste of a review unit…
Nope. Not for me. That price point is insane.
I want the Duo for one purpose – it's the ultimate portable writing station. The app I use while on the go is only made for iOS and iPadOs. That app is Scrivener. With the Duo and a Magic Keyboard, I can have a truly portable fiction writing station. Just take the Duo out of my pocket, place the ketboard on the table, and start writing. Apple even makes a cover with a kickstand for the Duo. All other considerations are viewed through The Scrivener lens (no, I won't switch what app I use for writing). I AM waiting for the second generation of Duo. By then all the apps should be updated for the Duo.
No hands indeed
I ordered one, but I do think Apple could have circumvented some of their compromises by simply making the phone a bit taller when closed. Not so tall that it completely ruins the aspect ratio but say an inch taller and maybe they could have fit the action button and the third camera. We know they're most likely already working on fixing the drawbacks. At the moment, their enemy is the laws of physics. It's a solid device but in order to make advancements increasing the size will most likely be necessary. As far as the weight goes….I don't think it will bother me. I prefer some heft to my devices so they don't feel so cheap. If everyone continues to complain about the weight, they're going to just scrap the titanium for aluminum which would suck.
All too-often
2000 USD for lounging ? There are better things to do. Thanks
Very practical review ! I am also an iPad Mini & iPhone user, have been thinking about switching until I watch this video, really need to rethink the decision and how it’s gonna blend in my daily workflow ! Thx a lot ❤
Another useless device just like the Vision Pro, they are completely out of touch.
If the technology government is saying the duo is Sufficient technology if you can’t afford a duo then you’re out of the boundaries of the technology governments adequacy Assessment
Mini, please.
