Poilievre optimistic that Trump-Carney call will bring resolution to tariff chaos

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed hope for a positive change in tone between Canada and the U.S. following a call between Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump. During a campaign stop in Nanaimo, B.C., Poilievre addressed the ongoing tariff chaos, stating, “Let’s hope there is a change in tone, we want to put an end to this crazy tariff chaos.”

Poilievre emphasized the importance of the trading relationship between Canada and the U.S., calling it the best in history. He advocated for growing this relationship as two separate sovereign nations, highlighting the need to move away from reliance on the American market.

“The Liberals have made us too reliant on the Americans. That will end,” Poilievre asserted. He promised to repeal the carbon tax, energy cap, and anti-pipeline law C-69, in order to bring back hundreds of millions of dollars to the Canadian economy. Poilievre also pledged to prioritize selling products between Canadians and overseas markets.

The potential positive outcome from the call between Carney and Trump is significant in the context of current international trade relations. With Poilievre’s strong stance on repealing certain laws and taxes, it will be interesting to see how this plays out in the upcoming Canadian election.
