Global National: May 15, 2025 – Manitoba Declares State of Emergency Over Deadly Wildfires
In an alarming escalation of wildfires across Manitoba, the provincial government has been compelled to declare local states of emergency in several provincial parks and communities. Fires have ravaged vast landscapes, leading to devastating consequences for residents and wildlife alike. In Lac Du Bonnet, the situation reached a critical point as flames forced families to evacuate their homes. Melissa Ridgen speaks with shaken locals who recount terrifying experiences of fleeing their properties under worsening conditions. In a grim turn, the community mourns the loss of two beloved neighbors, Richard and Sue Nowell, who tragically succumbed to the flames.
The wildfire crisis unfolds against a backdrop of social and political tensions elsewhere in Canada. Fortifying this complexity, the Alberta government has recently amended its controversial referendum law regarding separation, a move that has not quelled backlash from First Nations groups concerned about treaty rights. Despite these legal adjustments, as Heather Yourex-West notes, momentum for the separatist movement persists, exerting an economic strain on the province and sparking heated debates around governance and autonomy.
In a gripping electoral controversy, a mail-in ballot from a Quebec resident, which was returned uncounted, is igniting legal challenges. The Bloc Québécois is vowing to contest the results in the Terrebonne riding, where the party lost to the Liberals by a mere single vote. As Dan Spector covers, the voter, now at the center of this dramatic development, is coming forward to share her story, raising questions about the electoral process and individual voices in democracy.
Amidst these urgent national narratives, a touching human interest story emerges from Nova Scotia. A man and his half-sister from the Netherlands—children of a Canadian soldier who played a crucial role in liberating their country during the Second World War—have recently reunited after decades of separation. Heidi Petracek captures the emotional moment of their first encounter, shedding light on the powerful connections forged by history and shared heritage, reminding us of the lasting impact of war and the bonds that can bridge generations.
Today’s broadcast encapsulates the challenges and triumphs faced across Canada, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity. As the nation grapples with both natural disasters and social upheaval, these stories reflect the myriad struggles and stories of Canadians navigating an ever-changing landscape.

“We’re not immune to the suffering,” he says. True, the US government supports it. SOOOO disgusted by this government and all predecessor administrations who fought Israel’s wars.
Exactly what I expected, not a single one of those Albertans look like they finished high school.
Co2 is plant food
Cuddle the big princees cheifs cause they want are needed to preserve earth
That would be about right; one would have to win big with the lottery to buy a house in Canada.
Canada is one country , can't be divided if you don;t like it pack and go as you wish. Canada strong and free!
hahahaha, even liberal willing to screw the bloc. Conservatives in the west has no hope to beat cheating liberal
Next election we need to give Bloc Quebecois a chance. Look at the integrity he showed at the debate when he spoke for Quebec. Can you imagine what he could do for Canada?
Who would have thought the liberals propose tax cuts just like the conservatives for businesses and not workers. But yeah let’s keep flip flopping.
Alberta Republicans? Well, they just shot themselves in the foot using the name "Republican." We all know what a mess the USA Republicans have created. Not gonna happen here!
Alberta preimere has to go she cant get rid of the native in US…😂
Mark Carney doesn't need a budget; his signature is on the plastic funny money. You can hand him some Canadian Maple tree bark & he will sign it for you, but don't try to use it as money.
The government is starting these fires for sure. Have to keep the fear alive. The governments are criminals and evil.
It would be interesting to know how many OTHER mail in ballots have been returned or marked late and therefore not counted. This is the danger of mail-in voting, there's no way to verify if your vote was indeed counted, and correctly. Regardless of your political affiliation, we should all be very concerned about the integrity of our elections. You may win on a "technicality" this time, but you may lose the next one on that same "technicality". Electoral reform, integrity and security should be high on the priority list going forward.
It's a Trumpian plan indeed 😁
The Rez starts the fire, the Rez company puts out the fire. Monopoly
💔😢
We always send help to California are they there yet.
Camp fires are hazards.
As I said earlier, Alberta province, led by her premier, wants out and to belong to the USA. Not exactly as Texas separated from Mexico in 1837 and incorporated to the USA in 1845 but a bit like that…
If the West would separate from the East, the only thing that would change in the west is we would no longer be able to say we live in the second biggest country in the world. Other than that life would be great.
Can you just imagine how much fun it would be to make up our own national anthem? Travel again on a passport that is respected?
"Ey there bud jus you wait til berta separates from Terona. We're goin for a rip there bud, gonna make berta great again!"
….Yeah I'm sure it'll be really easy to build export capability for your resources when the price is below an economic recovery rate and your whole province burns to the ground every summer. Now you have to fight the fires and do all the evacuation and recovery funding yourself. Have fun with that.
