Roasting Meat in the 1820s | Homemade Strawberry Jam | ASMR Historic Cooking
Step into a time when the art of cooking was both an essential skill and a labor of love. In this enchanting recipe video, we invite you to experience the joys of roasting meat and creating homemade strawberry jam, much like our ancestors did from 1800 to 1822. This is more than just a cooking demonstration; it’s a journey back in time to an era where simplicity and flavor coalesced to create culinary masterpieces.
The Timeless Joy of Roasting Meat
Imagine the aroma of a succulent roast pork wafting through a cozy kitchen, the crackle of vegetables cooking alongside it, inviting family and friends to gather. In the 1820s, roasting meat wasn’t merely a task—it was a celebration. With simple seasonings and fire-tending skills passed down through generations, the art of roasting brought communities together, igniting warmth and camaraderie.
In our video, we focus on traditional methods that embrace the richness of the ingredients. The pork, marinated and seasoned with herbs of the era, takes center stage as it roasts to perfection. As it cooks, the fat renders, creating a flavorful base that enhances the accompanying vegetables, turning them into delectable sides. This method is a testament to the time-honored principles of cooking: quality ingredients and patience yield the most rewarding results.
Crafting Homemade Strawberry Jam
Next, prepare to relish in the delightful process of making homemade strawberry jam, reminiscent of the era before pectin revolutionized fruit preserves. The method is as much about connection as it is about cuisine. By boiling ripe strawberries with sugar, we honor the age-old practice where the essence of fruit shines through. The resulting jam, with its rich, thick texture and vibrant flavor, tells a story of the land’s bounty.
Without the modern conveniences of our time, housewives would often fill a crock with their concoction, sealing it with a hog’s bladder or sometimes a simple layer of damp paper. The result was a jam that not only preserved the sweetness of summer’s strawberries but also encapsulated the very spirit of the 1820s culinary tradition.

I wonder if they used lemon juice to thicken strawberry jam….cause that's what some do now….something in the lemon works with the natural pectin in strawberries

Nice job on the meat. Never used pectin, just cook it down, always good. Prayers for your delivery,, I had 2 children, it's amazing, and breast fed. but won't go on, as you will see. Always had a close bond with my children, when they were young, we did everything together , and now being older, being born in the 80's, we still do when we can, and enjoy our time, Children are a blessing.
