So, about this. I’ve heard so many Thai people say “Pad Thai is a tourist food, no Thai person eats it.” And I’m always confused by that, because I have Pad Thai all the time.
But then, I kind of understand.
You see, for Thai people, Pad Thai is just “one of the noodle dishes”. It is not any more special or different than other noodle dishes, nor any dishes for that matter. In fact, it’s often seen as a “streetfood junk meal” because they’re usually sold in stalls or hawk carts and rarely in proper dine-in restaurants.
So, for Thai people who have had Pad Thai a couple times per month (or even years) who only bought it because they were desperate for some quickly done meals and other places were closed, when they see that somehow there are now a whole bunch of foreigners flocking in for some Pad Thai, they brushed it off as a trend/fad or a tourist trap.
But, you were right; Thai people are becoming more proud of the Thai cuisine as it spreads worldwide and becoming more fond of Pad Thai as the result.
Amazing video btw, as usual.
