Summary of The Burglar (1957)
Directed by Paul Wendkos, The Burglar is a gripping film noir that combines elements of crime and psychological tension against the backdrop of the Jersey Shore. The film features a compelling performance by Dan Duryea as Nat Harbin, a professional thief orchestrating a high-stakes jewelry heist with his dysfunctional crew. As the plot unfolds, Harbin’s seemingly straightforward plan quickly devolves into chaos filled with paranoia and treachery.
The heist triggers a relentless pursuit as a crooked cop and the mob close in on Harbin and his team. Amidst the turmoil, Harbin must not only fight for his survival but also protect a young woman he has raised, adding an emotional layer to an already tense narrative. The film explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the dire consequences of a life of crime.
Joining Duryea in the cast are the glamorous Jayne Mansfield, who brings her charm and wit to the screen, and Martha Vickers, adding depth to the character dynamics. Peter Capell rounds out the ensemble, enhancing the film’s engaging complexity.
With its moody cinematography and sharp dialogue, The Burglar is a noteworthy entry in the film noir genre, capturing the darker sides of ambition and desperation. The film is a striking reminder that in the world of crime, trust is a luxury few can afford.

Good find.
Interesting flick in how it was presented and acting that was well done. Dan is always the man l never saw a bad performance by him. Tku for post.
This was a very entertaining movie..Really good, lots of twists and the ending is expected but still un- expected. Really Good!!!
Poor Dan Duryea's character can't ever catch a break. Love the guy.
Thanks for sharing this terrific film. Been wanting to see it for a long time.
This movie is okay, but it doesn't rate with the top film noirs like Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon or The Big Sleep, to name a few. Dan Duryea is a very good actor, but his costars were average at best. Jayne Mansfield is a looker, but her acting skills are below par. There were too many dead spots for me to rate this film as no more than slightly above average.
Fabulous cast 👍 great movie 😎💕👍
Every decision of the hard core mastermind Duryea after the heist is so incongruous with his situation along with all his orders and actions, that when violence erupts there's no basis for it, and it falls flat. It was a disturbing trend with noirs from that period.
HALF WAY THROUGH AND THE COMMERCIALS ARE A LOT BETTER BYE BYE
I loathe military movies.
Dan never disappoints
Stupid ass movie but his phone is a three-dollar bill total bulshit
Not quite what I expected.
ALWAYS INCLUDE THE YEAR OF THE MOVIE
Jane Mansfield was terrific in this film; I wish she had stayed true to herself instead of turning into a a squealing caracture…
Music is often too loud!
I'm always impressed by the way that American films from this era fully address police and political corruption. In Britain, this honest approach was suppressed and censored up until the 1970s. Even then, the lie was that it was just 'one' rotten apple in the barrel.
Great movie stars 5.
Dan Druyea was magnificent in the movie The Little Foxes. His character was so weak and sleazy he made my skin crawl.
Dan Duryea is great in everything even if the movie is not that great he makes them watchable but I've never really seen him in a bad movie or tv show. One of greatest actors of all time.
Dan was one of the best actors of all time.
Is Baylock's desire to kite out to Central American a tribute to Doc Reidenschneider's [ THE ASPHALT JUNGLE ] desire to hit Mexico for the hot babes to be found there? BTW, Blaylock [Peter Cappell] played the unsympathetic head of the court martial in PATHS OF GLORY. And the other hood was the candy-munching supply clerk in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. The two voices are unmistakable
Dan Duryea… legend👍📽👏😊
I skipped by this movie for years. It's much better than I expected.
John Facenda shows up in the titles. He the NFL FILMS voice guy.
Strange movie and … awfull score ! For once Dan Duryea plays a good guy …
THE BAMBOO SAUCER
Great movie!
Starring Dan Duryea
Never mind…that blaring Muzak is the pitttts
❤❤❤
found it.
I always like to know the release date of each movie;
Excellent movie. I expected a soppy romantic finale but was pleasantly surprised at the sordid hopelessness alongside bitter disappointment portrayed, just like in real life.
Interesting movie. I like the style and their use of music in heightening suspense and getting the point across. Never knew that Jayne Mansfield ever appeared in a serious movie until now.
At 23:53 blank screen only audio. What!!!!
Bleak, claustrophobic movie. All characters played well by the actors.
56:18 The police shot the man in the back of the car several times yet no window was broken.
This could be good. Paul Wendkos' debut film in 1957.
Very interesting film that’s been missing from YouTube for years. Based on a good book, too.
I've never seen a bad movie with Dan Duryea. He's always delivered 100%.
Taut as the hire wire act at the Steel Pier. Seemed some scenes were cut but the key characters stuck as the street types they all were. Suspenseful with a warm message. Family sticks together to the end. Dan Duryea certainly carried it, kept the thread flowing along. I would have liked more work on the dialogue producing more confidence and sophistication in the dialogue.
music to loud
No action, so very boring ….
She looks hungry alright
Like Dan Duryea. Enjoyed him in many westerns. Martha Vickers was very pretty woman. Also is that John Facenda? (football follies, nfl films).
I hate it when Dan Duryea gets killed.
