The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial: A Study in Duty and Conscience
Director: Robert Altman
Writers: Herman Wouk (play), Charles K. Pechin (adaptation)
Cast: Eric Bogosian, Jeff Daniels, Brad Davis, among others.
The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, released in 1988, presents a gripping courtroom drama adapted from Herman Wouk’s acclaimed play. Under the direction of Robert Altman, this film delves into the moral complexities faced by military personnel during World War II, focusing on the trial of naval officers who mutinied against their captain, portrayed through powerful performances by Eric Bogosian and Jeff Daniels.
Set against the backdrop of a Navy ship, the narrative intricately unfolds the events leading to the trial, emphasizing the psychological instability and paranoid behavior of Captain Queeg, played with depth by Bogosian. The officers, led by Lt. Maryk (Daniels), confront their decisions in the face of an unstable command, raising questions about duty, loyalty, and personal conscience.
Altman’s signature style shines through with overlapping dialogues and a realist approach that immerses viewers in the courtroom’s tense atmosphere. The film transcends mere procedural drama, evolving into a probing exploration of human moral dilemmas. Each character’s perspective adds layers to the narrative, challenging the audience to ponder the fine line between courage and cowardice.
The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is not just a depiction of a legal battle but a profound examination of the psyche of those in wartime, making it a standout piece that resonates well beyond its 1980s release, inviting reflection on the sacrifices made in the name of duty.

Can’t believe they did a remake of this classic. 👎😩
I'm in this movie! so excited to find it after all these years! It was amazing to meet Robert Altman, I remember him going around to each and every extra and shaking our hand and thanking us for being there.
A Charge that would Never be brought to Trial, the Officer's who promoted the Captain to his position were Responsible Dismissing his Incompetence to Command. The Seamanship of the Captain was brought into question by his incompetence placing the ship and that of the ships company in grave peril.
Man ,the ews never stop with their constant victimhood , while victimizing everyone else
I agree this was a disappointment but it had a lot to live up to. If you have never read the book it’s perhaps the greatest book i have ever read in my life. I also see Wouk’s Winds of War is on YOutube. What a great mini-series. I think Winds of War was about 20 percent of the reason i sought and received my Commission as a Naval Officer lol. That and too many JOhn Wayne movies like IN Harm’s Way.
Terrible audio, fading inconsistent… great story though.
Brilliant film drama/screenplay.Reminds me of "A few good men" wouldn't mind seing that again.
So, did they land on Pitcairn Island, burn the ship, mate with the natives and live happily ever after?
Some uniform insignia are incorrrect.
Begosian really stands out! He is the best part, rest is pretty boring. I FF through an hour of it.
Thank you for uploading and sharing this classic story
Focusing just on the court martial makes for compelling viewing if you are into court room dramas.
If you watch a movie for intellectual stimulation you may prefer this to Bogart's intensely emotional version. I did. There is also a 2023 version … not seen it yet.
this is not a patch on the originl bogart version it had action and bogart was incredible
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Highly recommended it.
Michael Murphy killed it as the conscience of the court. He's always been one of my favorites.
Me pregunto PORQUE NO HAY SUBTITULOS EN ESPAÑOL !!!!!!
The 1950’s classic blows this away.
Nice try, but the original movie was much better. You can't beat the performances of Humphrey Bogart, Van Johnson, E.G. Marshall, Fred MacMurray and Jose Ferrer. A true classic!
1:25:19 This depiction of Queeg comes off even crazier than Humphrey Bogart's version. At least he knew when to shut up!
I miss Brad.
This is an excellent presentation. It is equal to the original movie in every way, precisely because they show a different perspective. They tell same story in very engrossing detail. I would love to see both these films back to back.
The US and NATO (the west) protects the Bank for International Settlements not their respected country's economy's that means their is no free markets. BRICKS nations want to control their own economy's, and sever their ties with the Bank for International Settlements, so will the west start WW3 to stop the BRICKS + nations???
NOTE: the Bank for International Settlements is not elected is not accountable to the public and not prosecutable by any one…This is insane!
NOTE2: The west has surrendered their economic sovereignty to the Bank for International Settlements
Since 1945 all war have been instigated by The Bank for International Settlements and been keep secret from the American people
This version pulled a ton from the book that was missing from the bogart or sutherland versions for sure.
I live in the Philippines two inconsistent facts at the beginning of this movie already. Typhoons here come from the west not the east and they are counter clockwise not clockwise
