The #1 WORST Weight Loss Advice in the World
In this eye-opening video, Dr. Eric Berg reveals the single most detrimental weight loss advice that countless dietitians and health professionals promote: calorie counting and portion control. Drawing on three decades of experience and over 8,700 success stories, Dr. Berg argues that this popular approach fosters hunger and cravings, ultimately slowing down metabolism as the body adapts to constant low-calorie intake. He explains how high-carb, low-calorie diets raise insulin levels, preventing fat from being used as fuel and resulting in a myriad of health issues like brain fog and high blood pressure.
To combat these pitfalls, Dr. Berg shares 13 practical weight loss tips, including prioritizing low carbohydrate intake, practicing intermittent fasting, and avoiding late-night snacking. He emphasizes that sustainable weight loss is about supporting the body’s natural processes rather than restricting calories. With this insightful guidance, viewers are encouraged to rethink conventional dieting wisdom and embrace healthier habits for lasting weight loss. Don’t miss out on Dr. Berg’s transformative strategies!

Surprisingly, the most common weight loss tips given by mainstream dietitians and medical professionals are the worst diet advice! Calorie counting and portion control will leave you feeling hungry and constantly craving carbs. The body adapts to a low-calorie diet, leading to a slower metabolism. A low-calorie, high-carbohydrate diet raises insulin levels.
I’m sure you’ve heard these other bad weight loss tips:
• Eat 6 small meals per day
• Count calories
• Increase fiber
• Drink more water to help you feel full
• Chew gum
• Take Ozempic
These tips will not boost fat loss!
Your body can use fat or glucose for fuel. Although stored fat is potential energy, you must lower your insulin to utilize it.
Insulin resistance is at the root of many chronic illnesses and can negatively affect the liver, nervous system, immune system, and more. Low-calorie diets that don’t lower insulin are not sustainable. You won’t be able to achieve your goals if you’re hungry, craving carbs, dealing with brain fog, high blood pressure, or other related issues.
If you really want to lose weight, stop calorie counting! Try these 13 weight loss tips instead:
1 Don’t use pre-workout, sugary drinks, or protein bars.
2. Keep your carbs at around 10 to 20 grams per day.
3. No bright lights at night.
4. Get early morning sun.
5. Avoid late-night snacking.
6. Never buy junk food at the grocery store. Don’t shop while hungry!
7. Be cautious around social situations.
8. Walk after meals.
9. Don’t eat unless you’re hungry.
10. Prioritize healthy animal protein.
11. Consume apple cider vinegar before meals.
12. Avoid diets that keep you bloated.
13. Do periodic prolonged fasting.

A lot of peoples' fat is around vital organs, and this is a great strategy to help reduce that. Visceral fat is most noticeable in men with a "keg"-belly. Inflammation, cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and sleep disorders are linked to visceral fat.
Diagnosed pre diabetic. What! Take Daily exercise, hardly ever eat processed food. Actually DONT like it.
So, what’s going on. Gotta do something so cut out sugar by 95% , kept up exercise AND ate more fat. Butter, cheese, full fat milk.
Well lost a bit of weight, caught the common virus going round. A week in bed on and off. Better now, so where am I at now.
Blood pressure normal, not so active, DONT seem to have the energy yet. Not well but not ill and have eaten more fat than I ever would have in the past. Not sure what I think to be honest. Am going to eat, sensibly, the goodie foods at Christmas and then back to no sugar and all the other advice. Let’s see.
Excellent video Doc! Would love to see a video on IF in maintenance mode.
@00:15 Watching from F🇫🇯j as a dietician and have been following the channel for about 5 years now with most insights right on point.
Some of the worst advice are blunt ones like 'Eat Less, Move/Exercise More' and 'Just Lose some weight for health)
i too had bloating on my right side, didnt knew it could be from to much carbs
I would love to see examples of below 20 grams of carbs. And what is the best choice of those carbs. Thanks Dr Berg!
I’m also one of his success stories
Help me to deal with cortisol abdomen fat …insulin resistance leptin resistance acidity belching headache
Thanks for sharing your research work Dr Berg
💯👍👏🙏😊
Dr. Berg has saved me from so much problems. after a MRI that didnt' detect anything dr.bergs advice fixed it.
Uh I thought people in ancient times ate 6 "meals" a day like the size of a fist? Of course, they walk long miles and stuff so I think that's why it didn't cause high insulin. Idk
I work nights, and though sleep is hard, I incorporate fasting 16 hours and eating animal foods and drinking water with cucumber lemon and mint. I eat dinner around 9pm and start fasting at 10pm. I start work at 11pm until 7am, go home and go to bed. After 2pm I wake up to start my day and have my first meal. I also started eating cooked mushrooms daily for Vitamin D intake. This works, no matter what shift you work as long as you can incorporate a fast each day.
Carnivore equates to about ten g carbs a day if you consider protein to glucose conversion surely 🤔
My husband did the keto diet and he lost 60lbs. It works!!
Thank you Dr Berg again for sharing another great video. May God blessed you and your family!
So grateful for your content. Great video. Thank you, Dr Berg ❤
Hes the best of the best
The "Worst" Advice Explained
Dr. Berg argues that lowering calories and practicing portion control while maintaining a high carbohydrate intake is counterproductive [01:03].
Insulin's Role: High carbs keep insulin levels elevated, which prevents the body from tapping into stored fat for energy [02:07].
Metabolic Adaptation: Repetitive low-calorie dieting causes the body to become "too efficient" at using energy, effectively slowing down your metabolism and making future weight loss harder [01:23].
The "Eco Mode" Analogy: He compares the body to a hybrid car in "eco mode"—when it can't access fat (gas), it runs poorly on limited glucose (electricity), leading to fatigue and brain fog [03:55].
13 Practical Tips for Better Health
Skip Pre-Workout Sugar: Avoid sugary drinks or protein bars before working out; instead, try fasted morning workouts to maximize fat burning [06:16].
Ultra-Low Carb: Keep carbohydrates between 10–20 grams per day to lower insulin and address metabolic issues [06:58].
Dim Lights at Night: Reduce blue light exposure 90 minutes before bed to lower cortisol and increase melatonin [07:46].
Morning Sunlight: Get 20 minutes of sun in the morning to properly activate your daily cortisol cycle [08:32].
No Late-Night Snacks: Snacking at night increases insulin before sleep; use intermittent fasting to tap into your own fat reserves [08:54].
Don't Buy Junk Food: Avoid keeping "trigger foods" in your pantry so you don't have to rely on willpower when stressed [10:01].
Social Strategy: Eat before attending parties or events so you aren't tempted to cave to high-carb social eating [10:39].
Post-Meal Walking: A 30-minute walk after eating helps burn off extra sugar and reduces stress [11:16].
Eat Only When Hungry: Once you go low-carb, your hunger will naturally decrease as you begin to "eat" your own body fat [11:53].
Prioritize Animal Protein: Essential for tissue repair and biochemical health; it is more satisfying and better for blood sugar than plant proteins [12:29].
Apple Cider Vinegar: Take 1 tsp/tbsp in water before meals to aid digestion and blood sugar stability [13:16].
Monitor Bloating: Adjust your fiber intake (or try carnivore/fermented veggies) to ensure your diet doesn't leave you feeling bloated [13:30].
Prolonged Fasting: Periodically incorporate longer fasts for the most significant health benefits [14:11].
