Argentina Faces FIFA Disciplinary Action After Falklands Celebration Following World Cup Victory
In a contentious display of national pride, the Argentina national football team may be on the verge of facing disciplinary action from FIFA. This comes after their players celebrated a dramatic World Cup semi-final victory over England with a provocative banner asserting their claim to the Falkland Islands.
Argentina staged a remarkable comeback in Atlanta, turning the tide from a 1-0 deficit to secure a 2-1 win against England, managed by Thomas Tuchel. The jubilant celebration at the final whistle saw players brandishing a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” translating to “The Falklands are Argentine.” This act has reignited tensions surrounding a long-standing territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory located 300 miles off Argentina’s coast, have been a point of contention for decades, culminating in a brutal war between the two nations from April to June 1982. The conflict resulted in the deaths of 655 Argentine servicemen, 255 British servicemen, and three island residents, leaving scars that still resonate within both countries.
FIFA has a history of imposing fines for political gestures in sports. Notably, in 2014 the governing body fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 after players displayed a similar banner during a friendly match against Slovenia, deeming the action a breach of regulations regarding political statements in football.
As speculation mounts regarding potential repercussions, this incident serves as a reminder of how deeply intertwined sports, national identity, and historical conflicts can be. Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, now find themselves facing not only the delicate balance of sporting accolades but also the weight of sovereignty claims that have yet to be resolved.
The developments in this ongoing saga warrant close attention as FIFA investigates the situation, posing questions about the intersection of politics and sport on the global stage.

Kosovo is Serbia 🇷🇸
Argentina’s claim to the Falklands is as strong as the US’s claim to Greenland. “It’s close, therefore it’s ours”
i would rather focus on England's coach. He has a lot to answer for.
Are the english going to start moaning about the napoleonic wars when they get buried by France in the losers final on saturday?
Disqualify them. The rules are there to protect the game. They knew them, they broke them.
Lol hahaha payback maybe?
Lion's don't care about the opinions of sheep.
By fifa law argentina should be banned for their hate speech & paraphernalia against england with the banner, they are allowed to do this but england are'nt allowed to fly the flag in thier own country please let there be any justice in the world
They were even fighting fellow Argentinas before the match, so no surprise what they did towards England fans.
I don't think people fully understand how much of a national obsession the Falkland Islands and the war is to Argentina. So, with that in mind, there's only one 'banner' that really matters. The 🇬🇧 flying over Stanley! And when the dust from a game of football settles, it still will be. And they know it.
Black felt tip scrawl on a stolen hotel bedsheet won't win them the Islands back.
FALKLAND ISLANDS ARE BRITISH.
They should be banned from the tournament. Simple as that.
That stolen hotel bedsheet they scrawled on is the same colour as the flag they raised after the task force had finished with them.
Lets hope Spain wins, but i think FIFA has already got the 'fix' in. Argentina should have been out before the quarter finals.
its not coming home, its staying abroad
Who won the fighting after the match? Asking for an idiot friend.
The regulations explicitly ban political symbols, as IFAB Rules states player equipment must not feature political slogans; FIFA Stadium Code of Conduct bans political banners, flags, and materials and Tournament Rules (Article 34.3) prohibits players from displaying political messages, In 2014, they displayed the same "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" banner and were fined £20,000.
While the context means the sanction should be far more severe, Trump bootlicker Infantino has shown willingness to intervene, and Trump is a political ally of Argentina's president, Javier Milei. Most likely outcome is a fine only, with no player suspensions impacting the final.
For the UK's right-wing reactionaries pearl-clutching and raging about Argentinia's political banner, a reality check is wise.
First, the territorial claim is hardly a clear-cut moral outrage. Spain, France, Argentina, and the British Empire all claimed and occupied those islands at various points, until the Brits took them by force in 1833. Legitimacy gets messy when a territory has been traded for centuries.
Second, context matters. In 1982, Britain could rely on NATO allies, had a strong leading voice in Europe, and a sympathetic Reagan administration. That was then. Today, the UK is a diminished middle power that essentially declared political and economic sanctions on itself a decade ago, softening its own influence and global standing. It now functions as a vassal state to a "might-is-right" United States – an ally that casually ignores international law, refuses to honour its word, and has just handed $40 billion of US taxpayers' money to Argentina's authoritarian regime, while openly signalling sympathy for their designs on the Falklands. In that geopolitical reality, the UK Govt might wish to tread carefully.
I am mostly sure I've read Malvinas, not falklands
At least their football team won against England.
Unlike general Galtieri.
Still doesn’t make the Falklands Argentinian 😂😂😂
They win and they’re still crying lmao
😂😂
Nightmare for European– Messi
As an Indian, i support Argentina
lost like a dog
Mark7:24-30
And from thence he (Jesus) arose and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house , and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet. The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.
no they wouldn't
Should be a rematch 🤔 Come on Spain!
France and Spain have a better claim to the Falklands than Argentina
Well done BBC! England go out, you will drag this out rather than addressing the UK'S problems which are: two tier policing, housing shortage, government corruption and so on.
Thomas got caught up in his own tactics — they were nowhere close
'No-one gave it to us.' I'm going to give a pointed look at the referees in their last two matches here.
To complain about those islands called the “Malvinas,” the British will have to recognize the place as the Malvinas and not "the Fartlands"—otherwise, you’re complaining about a place that doesn’t exist (?
Argentina 🇦🇷 deserve to be stripped off from participating in the final politics in a World Cup has no place within the spirt of the game I hope FIFA investigates and deals with this appropriately
Lol anyone surprised hey. England should have gone out in the group stages but as always fifa made sure England got through
They thiefed it from England
england are such sore losers, having state officials writing to Infantino. england is just America light at ths point.
