In the heart of Minneapolis, Guy Fieri shines a spotlight on a beloved gem—Al’s Breakfast. Known for its classic American fare, this iconic diner sets the standard for hearty morning meals that locals rave about. On his culinary adventure through the U.S., Guy dives into the indulgent and satisfying breakfast options that have made Al’s a staple for decades.
The Essence of Al’s Breakfast
Step into Al’s Breakfast, and you’re instantly enveloped by the warm, inviting atmosphere that pairs perfectly with the aroma of sizzling bacon and freshly brewed coffee. With its quintessential diner charm, this family-run establishment has been serving generations, providing a nostalgic backdrop for both longtime patrons and newcomers. The small, cozy setting fosters a sense of community, where sharing a meal is just as important as the food itself.
A Hearty Menu
At Al’s, breakfast is not just a meal—it’s an experience. Guy Fieri can’t resist the classic offerings, which include fluffy pancakes, perfectly cooked eggs, and the star attraction: the infamous “Al’s Special.” This dish features a mouthwatering blend of hash browns topped with your choice of eggs and savory meats, smothered in a house-made gravy that takes the flavor to the next level.
Highlights from the Menu:
- Al’s Special: A towering mountain of hash browns, eggs, and bacon or sausage, all drizzled with rich sausage gravy.
- Fluffy Pancakes: Golden, light, and served with maple syrup, perfect for that sweet morning fix.
- Classic Omelets: Packed with your choice of fresh ingredients, cooked to perfection, and served hot.
Ingredients Every Breakfast Enthusiast Needs
To recreate that classic Al’s Breakfast experience at home, make sure you have these essential ingredients on hand:
- Fresh Eggs: Choose large, free-range eggs for the best flavor.
- Golden Brown Hash Browns: The crispier, the better!
- Savory Bacon or Sausage: Opt for high-quality meats to enhance the richness of your dish.
- Creamy Sausage Gravy: This can be a game-changer—think comfort in a bowl!
- Fluffy Pancake Mix: For those looking to satisfy their sweet tooth.
Cooking Instructions
-
Prepare Hash Browns: Shred potatoes and squeeze out excess moisture. Cook them in a hot skillet until crispy and golden brown, seasoning with salt and pepper.
-
Cook the Meat: Fry bacon or sausage until it reaches a desired crunchiness. Set aside, keeping the grease to add flavor.
-
Scramble or Fry Eggs: Cook eggs in a separate skillet, choosing to scramble or fry as per your preference.
-
Make the Gravy: In the residual grease from the meat, add flour to create a roux, gradually whisking in milk until the mixture thickens. Stir in crumbled sausage if desired.
-
Assemble Your Plate: Start with a generous serving of crispy hash browns, place the eggs on top, add your choice of meat, and generously pour the gravy over the entire masterpiece.
-
Serve with Pancakes: Don’t forget to whip up a side of fluffy pancakes, drizzled with maple syrup to complete your classic breakfast spread.

Before Guy came around, I visited Ruth's Diner a number of times. Never for breakfast, though, only because it wasn't the right time of day. That was 22 years ago. No idea if Ruth is still around, though I suspect so. I certainly am not around in eastern SLC.

I moved away from minny-hopeless almost 40 years ago, the only things I fondly recall are BJ’s topless, King of Wings, Husker Du, Stand Up Franks, 5 Corners and the requisite hangover grub at Al’s.
