800 kW charging is impressive, but BYD is already talking about charging above 1.5 MW. At what point does Tesla’s larger battery become less of an advantage?
The camera mirrors make sense from an aerodynamic perspective, but I wonder how reliable they are in heavy rain, snow, or when the cameras get dirty.
BYD and Tesla seem to be solving the same problem in completely different ways. Would you rather have a bigger battery or much faster charging?
The missing European Long Range version is interesting. Do you think Tesla is waiting to see real fleet demand before offering a bigger battery?
The European Semi’s 550 km range actually seems reasonable for European freight. I’m more curious about how much payload it can carry after accounting for the truck and trailer weight.
I actually prefer Tesla offering different configurations for different markets. European trucking has completely different weight limits and driving conditions compared with the US.
The specs look good on paper, but fleet operators care about cost per kilometer and uptime more than acceleration or horsepower. I’d like to see a real-world comparison between the Semi and ETT 44.
I’m still skeptical about comparing 550 km with the US 500-mile version. The testing conditions are different, so aren’t those range numbers basically measuring different things?
30 minutes for a major range boost sounds practical, especially if it overlaps with the driver’s mandatory break. The real question is how many megawatt chargers will actually be available.
The 9,100 kg curb weight caught my attention. If Tesla can really keep the European version that light, could the payload advantage be more important than having a bigger battery?
Demand for these vehicles (by all makers) will exceed production for several years!
European here:
The Semi's European version is 99+% identical to the US Standard Range version. The changes are extremely minor… the main only being the replacement of the side mirrors by cameras mounted on arms. The second change is that its height is limited to European maximum of 4.00 meters, vs the US version's 4.11m. There is ZERO change on the drive train, and the performances are the same… only expressed slightly differently (40 tonnes gross weight and 80 km/h vs 82'000 lb and 55 mph).
The reason the LR version was not YET introduced in Europe is that it is too long by 60-70 cm to be within the maximum length allowed by the present version of EU regulation 56/93/EC. However, this regulation is getting revised in 2027, and will allow an additional 90 cm of length for "zero-emission" trucks. So, Tesla will most likely also introduce the LR version in Europe as soon as this change is in force (sometime in 2027).
BTW, the Semi is not at all "rated for 40 tonnes", it has in Europe a max gross weight of 42 tonnes, and even 44 tonnes starting next year with the revised EU reg 96/53/EC. The reason Tesla is giving the truck's range and efficiency at 1.0 kWh/km at 40.0 tonnes, is probably only a communication issue… such a round number stays in the mind better than saying 1.03 kWh/km at 42 tonnes!
European road weight limits prohibit the Tesla truck from being any heavier unless they are exempted like in America

That is about time. A market leder such as Volvo has 8 electric heavy truck models, each of them with tons of options. You order the truck in accordance with your specification and requirements. There is no one size fits all..

How is a 6×4 axle configuration with a Day Cab a European specification? Long Haul is normally 4×2 and maybe 6×2 with a steered pusher or trailing axle and high sleeper cab. Not fitting in turning radius and tyre wear in Europe. Then raving about the megawatt Tesla charger, where are they in Europe? I think BYD is a much more European vehicle, again the ultra fast charging has to become available and they have to build up a service Network. If I had to choose between Tesla & BYD at this moment it would be the BYD.
It seems the central driving position and the lack of a bunk is being objected to by the European truckers, the bunk could easily be fixed.
Why do you Americans compare to only the Chinese? Volvo, man, Mercedes, Renault, and more are battling in this arena.
By law, you have to stop for 45 minutes after 4 hours and 30 minutes of driving; assuming an average speed of 77 km/h, that means stopping roughly every 300 km.
to match a deisel you need 45000lbs and 825miles with a 10hr charge after 11hrs driving at 75mph climb hills at least 60mph and an on duty day is 14hrs then your 10.. this isnt the drivers needs its the brokers for the shipper receivers desire ….the end
if you cant meet the receivers shippers brokers demand then freight becomes limited in wich case it wont sell ….to do that now were talking road weight …like bridge standards so your dealing with congress and taxes
the alternative to 825 miles is double the trucks for relays then you got the charging stations and parking some of these guys cant back up without hitting something it means bigger parking lots alot of drivers park at a shipper receiver or rest area or home …
