The Hireling: A Tense Exploration of Class and Obsession
The Hireling, directed by Alan Bridges, is an evocative 1973 drama that delves deep into the intricate relationships between class and personal connection in post-war England. The film stars the formidable Robert Shaw as Steven Ledbetter, a stoic chauffeur who finds himself increasingly enmeshed in the life of his aristocratic employer, Lady Franklin, portrayed by the talented Sarah Miles.
Set against a backdrop of societal upheaval, Lady Franklin is slowly recovering from a nervous breakdown, embodying the fragility of a privileged life marked by emotional turmoil. Steven, dedicated yet emotionally reserved, becomes her steadfast protector, navigating the complexities of her aristocratic world while grappling with his own feelings of attachment.
As the narrative unfolds, the dynamic shifts dramatically when Lady Franklin enters a romantic relationship with a local politician. This development ignites a tumultuous spiral for Steven, thrusting him towards a psychological edge. The film masterfully captures the tension between the characters, exposing the vulnerabilities and desires that bind them.
With a screenplay adapted from the novel by the acclaimed writer and playwright, The Hireling offers a poignant examination of love, duty, and the often-disruptive forces of social class. The evocative performances by Shaw and Miles, coupled with grounded direction and a gripping score, create a compelling atmosphere that immerses audiences in the emotional landscape of the characters.
In The Hireling, viewers are treated to a profound exploration of the human psyche, exploring themes of obsession, sacrifice, and the haunting effects of societal expectations. It remains a significant cinematic experience that resonates with anyone intrigued by the complexities of love and loyalty.

What a depressing end to the movie. The acting of both main characters were brilliant and I was expecting a better ending. Very disappointing.
This is probably a good picture, but you can't hear any of the dialogue.
Extraordinary 😅
Certainly a very good movie and with or without class involved, many of us could probably tell our own gut wrenching tales of love.
Really good. Leaves me to wonder, what will become of them all ?
Interesting movie but the ads are too frequent and long!
Wow, best film I’ve seen in ages ❤
What stupid commercials. Like watching The View. Jabber jabber jabber….
TOUR DE FORCE PRODUCTION
Fact: This movie won the Palme d'Or at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival (shared with Scarecrow) and Sarah Miles received a Special Jury Prize for her performance as Lady Franklin
The last two minutes might be my favorite movie ending. They say that to this day he's still crashing his car and singing "God save the King".
Riverting movie, keep you guessing through it all.
Thanks for the upload 👍
Oh, oh, she is too consuderate and flattering to the macho driver, whose face we not see. The chauffeur calls her m'lady, but I sense he is in charge.
I find the doctor to be controlling and supercilious.
Three of the best actors.
I think Sarah Miles totally copies the royal family way of speaking.
In this film , she also has their vague ways.
I think she is an odd duck, snd overblown in real life too.
waste of time.
13:49 she asks “cream?”
Are they having coffee?
The pot looks like a teapot, so l’m confused here.
How odd no one mentioned the great poem by R. Brooke about Grancester I guess it is more interesting posting about the class of a bygone system, more or less, which is not the the actual meaning of the film itself Don't you think?
She was insufferable.
Sad to see the English disparaged in this manner. WW1 was devastating to British men, women and children of every class; but, the poor always pay the greatest cost.
Thank-you for the upload of this film.📽
The poor horse was being demanded to do the impossible struggling to move backwards in the dark in a dangerously tight space – and our "leading man" sees this begins shouting at the horse and driver then he lays on the horn in a fit with no regard for the trapped horse. 😧
Poor Steven! 😢😢😢
good show
Unbelievable the number of commercials it makes it difficult to follow the story line with so many interruptions .. NEXT
All pretty messed up characters, but good acting. PTSD all around (or something).
Great!
Excellent acting . The British class system depicted in all it's sordid glory .
WHAT 🤔A SUPER DUPER MOVIE📽 BEST I'VE 👁SEEN👁 for AGES, ACTOR'S WERE AMAZING🎭 A REAL TREAT.👍
a whole class of people unable to look after themselves…astounding and a bit repulsive to this Canadian lol
You Can NOT Mix The Social Classes Same Lesson In The Great Gatsby
low audio.
Brilliant!!!
I would have loved to read a novel version of this film!
PLEASE SUBTITLES !.
Precisely why you should not hire your vintage vehicle out to film and television companies.
"I Haven't Got Anything To Go Back To, Because Everything Is Here With You."
Hmm, quite an ending 😂
