A new series about Julio Iglesias’ life and career is coming to Netflix — and the Spanish crooner will form part of the creative process.
“Julio Iglesias is one of the most important figures in music history and he’s finally ready to tell his story!” Netflix’s Thursday (Feb. 8) announcement on Instagram reads. “For the first time, the living legend will be part of the creative process and help bring to life a Netflix series that chronicles his incredible musical trajectory.”
“After that many speculations, books and documentaries in which I have not been involved, for the first time, I have decided to tell the truth about my life to a universal company like Netflix,” the 80-year-old artist said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “After much deliberation, finally, a very touching letter sent to me by Bela Bajaria [chief content officer at Netflix] was enough to convince me that Netflix was the ideal company to develop this project.”
Iglesias boasts a 56-year music trajectory and has notched 20 titles on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, 11 of which hit top 10 and three No. 1 hits, including “Lo Mejor de tu Vida” which spent 13 weeks at the top in 1987. On the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, he landed three titles, including the Willie Nelson-assisted “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before,” which peaked at No. 5 in 1984.
The forthcoming series will “tell the story of how Iglesias became the first non-English artist to enter the American and Asian markets and turned into a universal star who is among the five biggest record sellers in history. Throughout his more than 55 years of artistic career, Julio Iglesias has recorded and sung in 12 languages and has connected fans from all over the world, becoming the first Spanish artist with universal reach to have his songs sung all over the planet,” expressed Netflix.
The project is currently in development and additional details have yet to be disclosed.
