Agribusiness in the USA – The dark side of productivity and profitability | DW Documentary
In the USA, agriculture is dominated by two magic words: productivity and profitability. The two million farmers in the United States are impressive businessmen. But their agribusiness is causing great damage.
Oversized farms, fattening facilities and pesticides: when it comes to producing more and more, almost anything goes. On cattle fattening farms in the Midwest, thousands of animals are crammed into stalls without a single blade of grass, fattened up and treated with growth hormones. Here, industrial methods are taken to the extreme.
Every year, farmers meet at the National Farm Machinery Show in Kentucky. It’s the big event of the US agricultural industry. It features farm machinery worth millions and a show that fans wouldn’t miss for the world: a tractor race that’s the most prestigious in the country.
In California, carrots, artichokes and strawberries are grown on huge plantations. But this west coast grower’s paradise is struggling with extreme water shortages. Water is pumped from rivers, reservoirs and groundwater reserves at great expense. Faced with a desperate water shortage, farmers are working at breakneck speed — even if it means that the region’s inhabitants have no access to drinking water.

Thats clear view, why eu dont want american food
It is sad,but taste is good.😊
Go for farming
Talk about indoctrination. Take them out of public school and "teach them what we want them to know". What a terrible idea, and all the while they're relying on the technologies produces by the public education system. Eventually this will go off the rails.
Lots of bs propaganda in this documentary lol
Charlie is going places!!
9:03 at the farm everything is supersized haha
😆
Vegan for the animals, the environment and health💚
Capitalism at the end of growth. Crash will be sone. Reason? Monopoly over exploited
The problem is not farming its junk food. lol why is this blamed on agriculture?
Cancer food
Unfortunately most big companies take advantage of everything, if the price matched how healthy it was that would be more fair
🎉ㅍㄹ
First and foremost they're attacking animal farming and the number of ruminants in the wild before europeans arrived almost equalled the number of cattle being raised today in the prairies. Also almost all cattle are raised in pastures until the last 2-3 months before they get slaughtered.
The biggest culprit for pollution, destruction of wildlife and ecosystems is vast monocropping which is by the way bolstered by Ethanol 😂 a staggering 40% of corn is used for ethanol, that's millions of hectares of destruction.
Now you might say "monocrops exist to produce animal feed", you'd be wrong, we give animals the scraps from producing seed oils, ethenol etc… 95% of soybeans are crushed to produce soybean oil and soyoilcake is processed for soy meal, which is deemed inedible by FDA. Corn is also milled and the waste from these mills are used for animal feed. Ultimately we use waste to produce more food.
Also crop agriculture is the main culprit for depleting water tables.
How about if the USA stops trying to feed the entire world? We could concentrate only on our own consumption of beef, chicken and corn. Then the hyper industrialization could stop or at least slow down. The environment would improve along with everyones health
Many things I got to know first time by DW documentary.
A Great documentary, DW.
Thank you.
14:43 "Which is worse for the environment, the cars stuck in traffic or the few cows on a grass field?" – asked by the man owning an industrial farm of 6500 cows that never saw grass in their lives 😅
Welcome to capitalism 😂
The problem lies with the US government who gave incentives to those rich capitalists instead of the smaller mom and pop business…
Let's see those home school kids in 30 years 🙂
People here are criticizing industrialized farming while taking for granted how large-scale agriculture has ensured that food shortages are no longer a national crisis in the West, even with overpopulation. 🙄
One farmer >300 million kenyan shillings…
If you take your kid to the hospital… it doesn't poison the rest of us
The world is hungry, and someone's gotta feed them.
Remember American people…Its the Todays leader Fault if the Industri pump up All water….
They "Steal" All Water remember that….
Its the same in Eu. But the Industry in Eu "Steal all fish" because of big fish boats….And Eu politics are very very Stupid, because they do exactly like the "mafia lobby" say……
Why do people or family want to move to the US. And this is what you do. You must be compelled
We have the best farmers in the world
These large corporate agricultural businesses only care about bottom line. No wonder we seeing increasing medical healthcare costs and rates of cancers and illnesses despite modern medicine advancements. It’s bc the food we eat today is unhealthy and full of chemicals rather than organic nutrients. All the medical technology in the world can’t undo the harm caused by unethical only for profit mega corporations.
The problem is the Water….Usa industri go to Drain out all the water….
the cattle part, they do NOT test for mad cow disease, apparently… because they grow so fast, there is no time for tests to find the disease… apparenty, thats the reason meat in USA is illegal in EU
also, if you want to be a farmer… you are needed to bend over to one of the 4 monopolies in usa, its kinda funny
This is why I am a vegetarian.
Let's get some Afrikaans people in there
I just got super high and thought about how humans as a species have always been savages and did terrible things to get where we are (not me or you human species in general)
We literally enslave other animals, sure we have to feed people but it’s just interesting to think about.
Also how many wars have we fought against other humans? Humans are still savages 😂
boycott usa business
Germany has paid Russia more for gas, than they’ve given to Ukraine since the war started. Their economy is dependent on it.
