Former Scottish first minister Alex Salmond has passed away at the age of 69. Salmond was known as a prominent figure in the Scottish independence movement and was a skilled political strategist.
Throughout his career, Salmond played a key role in shaping the landscape of Scottish politics. He served as the first minister of Scotland from 2007 to 2014, leading the Scottish National Party (SNP) to victory in the 2007 and 2011 Scottish Parliament elections.
Under Salmond’s leadership, the SNP made significant gains in its campaign for Scottish independence, culminating in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. Although the referendum ultimately resulted in a vote to remain part of the United Kingdom, Salmond’s efforts brought the issue of Scottish independence to the forefront of political discourse.
In addition to his role in the independence movement, Salmond was known for his sharp wit and political acumen. He was a fierce debater and skilled communicator, earning respect from supporters and opponents alike.
Salmond’s passing has left a void in Scottish politics, with many mourning the loss of a formidable leader. His legacy as a champion for Scottish independence and a skilled political operator will endure in the years to come.

Couldn't you have got someone that didn't try to punt his unionist agenda?
Id1ot. Labour Party? No such thing, watered down Tories
As a Scotsman living in Paris I'm disappointed with this abysmal coverage by France 24. Very biased interview from someone who doesn't have much understanding of Scottish politics. Plenty of supporters and detractors in the Scottish polity that could have spoken on this far better.
Macshane was born in Glasgow but then grew up in England. He is not best placed to understnd why some Scots think the UK does not work.
surprised that you used such an obvious anti scot scot for your opinion piece, he sold his soul to Putin and sold out the nationalist movement hopefully your observer is totally wrong and scotland will one day be free of the English chains
May he RIP
