President Biden’s recent NATO news conference has sparked a wave of analysis and speculation over his performance and political future. WSJ’s Annie Linskey delves into the key moments from the conference, including Biden’s accidental reference to former President Trump instead of Vice President Harris, raising concerns over his mental acuity and fitness for office.
During the press conference, Biden discussed various foreign policy issues, highlighting the importance of NATO and reaffirming America’s commitment to its European allies. However, his slip-up in confusing Trump with Harris has only fueled existing anxieties over his health and cognitive abilities.
Despite facing mounting pressure from Democratic lawmakers urging him to withdraw from the 2024 race, Biden remained defiant during the conference, projecting an image of confidence and determination. This display of resilience comes at a time when the Democratic Party is grappling with internal disarray and conflicting opinions on Biden’s leadership.
As Biden’s presidency enters a crucial phase, the scrutiny surrounding his actions and statements continues to intensify. The fallout from his NATO news conference serves as a reminder of the challenges ahead for the administration and the uncertain political landscape shaping the 2024 election.

Regardless of what he wants, he needs to think about what Americans want.
Biden is under high scrutiny now because of his speech, but the reality is he has been fumbling his way words constantly even going far back to beginning of his first campaign days.
And thanks to joe , finally America will wake up and DEMAND term limits for ALL MEMBERS OF GOVERNMENT!!! We have senile senators as well ! Judges ! Etc etc . And trump is no different , he is old and going senile as well !, we deserve young representation!!!
TRUMP AND PUTIN RULE THIS GUYS BRAIN
"calmed down"???? Am I in the multiverse 😮😮😮
I heard it differently. I heard that he wouldn't have Donald Trump as his vice president. He wouldn't have chosen Harris if he didn't think she could do the job of the presidency. But he, at this time, feels he is the best person to be president now.
Grateful to Biden for his SERVICE to our country over years! 🇺🇸
But age does its thing! 😢
78 yo TRUMP MUST GO TOO!
There are NO JOBS where a 78 yo can APPLY and compete against a 45yo!
WHY should a president job, the most important job in the country, of one of the most powerful countries in the world be EVER allowed to be this old?!
So you don't mention his Trump Harris confusIon. His "She's not qualified" statement. C'mon WSJ, quit covering up this tragedy. 1:57
Vice president Trump for president, right Mr Potato Head??
I wouldn’t say he “calmed down the most nervous” I’d say he calmed down the LEAST nervous.
$90 billion pulled from Pac says more than anything. Game over.
Biden delivers intelligent and deep answers to the questions, Trump's talking about Hannibal Lector? Easy choice from where I sit
It’s indeed tragic but not for the reasons some may suggest. No wonder, AOC and some other younger congressmen and congresswomen have thrown their support behind Biden early after the debate. Because imagine a young or even an early senior age candidate jumping right now in the race instead of Biden; deep down they wouldn’t have known what they’re doing, how to appeal to different demographics, how to even survive an all but certain constitutional crisis in November. And on the other isle it’s actually quite the same.
The inevitable historical tragedy all around
They are saying Trump met with Biden and told him if he’d stay in the race and flip on the people involved in the last 4 years he would pardon him for all his crimes against America…..Trumps gonna come in like a wrecking ball!!
We simply cannot have a person with dementia running the country. He could be a consultant, but definitely not in charge.
Trump always messes up people’s names and who’s he racing against and world leaders names so it’s really a wash on that issue. Stats show that a change now will for sure lead to a Trump victory. Especially if they put Harris top of ticket. Americans at large won’t elect a woman or a woman of color right now
President Joe Biden, currently running for re-election, recently participated in a debate with Donald Trump. Observers noted that Biden appeared tired and struggled to counter the numerous falsehoods from Trump. While this perception is subjective, it has fueled media speculation and prompted some Democrats to suggest he step aside for another candidate. This scrutiny has intensified following a slip during the NATO summit’s 75th anniversary, where Biden mistakenly introduced Ukrainian President Zelensky as Putin before quickly correcting himself.
In the broader context, Biden’s concern about a potential Trump presidency is palpable. Trump, a highly controversial figure, faces 34 felony charges, has been convicted of sexual assault, and his business has been found guilty of fraudulent accounting practices. Despite these significant legal and ethical issues, Trump remains a formidable political force, with his behavior and statements often described as unhinged. His extreme positions and actions, encapsulated in the Project 2025 agenda, underscore the high stakes of the upcoming election.
Media coverage has reflected a double standard, with Biden’s minor gaffes receiving intense scrutiny, while Trump’s more severe transgressions are sometimes normalized. This disparity highlights the challenges faced by the media in balancing the coverage of a relatively conventional politician like Biden against the backdrop of Trump’s unprecedented and erratic conduct. In light of these dynamics, Biden’s occasional speech errors, while notable, must be weighed against the broader context of his presidency and the serious implications of a potential Trump return to office.
The media has a crucial role in ensuring fair and balanced reporting, especially in a high-stakes election. To achieve this, journalists and news outlets should strive for a few key principles. Firstly, *contextual reporting* is essential. This means providing background information and historical context to help the public understand the significance of events and statements. For instance, when covering Biden's occasional speech errors, it should be noted that such mistakes are not uncommon in older adults and should be weighed against his overall performance and policy achievements.
Secondly, the media should *equally scrutinize* both candidates. This involves not only reporting on Biden's gaffes but also giving equal or greater attention to Trump's legal troubles, erratic behavior, and policy proposals like Project 2025. By maintaining a balanced focus, the media can prevent the normalization of extreme behavior and ensure that the public is fully informed about the implications of each candidate's potential presidency.
Lastly, *highlighting achievements and failures* in a balanced manner is vital. Acknowledging Biden's successes during his first term, such as significant legislative achievements and effective handling of crises, provides a more comprehensive view of his presidency. Similarly, Trump's policies and their impacts, both positive and negative, should be thoroughly examined. This approach not only promotes a fair narrative but also empowers voters to make informed decisions based on a well-rounded understanding of both candidates' records and positions. By adhering to these principles, the media can uphold its responsibility to the American people and contribute to a more informed and fair election process.
In light of President Joe Biden’s recent slip of the tongue during the NATO summit, it’s important to contextualize and understand this occurrence within a broader framework. Biden has a well-documented history of stuttering from childhood, a challenge he significantly overcame through dedicated therapy. Such a history means occasional speech disfluencies may persist, and when coupled with the normal cognitive changes associated with aging, minor verbal slips are not uncommon for someone in their 80s. These instances should be viewed through the lens of his extensive experience and resilience rather than as indicators of cognitive decline.
Biden’s presidency is under intense scrutiny, particularly from the media, which seems to amplify these minor gaffes. This scrutiny is heightened by the high stakes of the upcoming election, where the potential consequences of a second Trump term weigh heavily on the public consciousness. Biden faces pressure not only from his own party but also from the broader political landscape and the media. This intense environment, combined with the responsibilities of handling a divided Congress and international crises such as the war in Ukraine, places significant stress on any leader, let alone an octogenarian.
Despite these pressures, Biden has demonstrated sharpness and intelligence, leading to notable achievements during his first term. His administration’s successes in navigating legislative challenges and addressing critical issues highlight his capability and resilience. It is crucial for the public and the media to maintain a balanced perspective, recognizing that occasional speech errors are a normal part of aging and do not detract from his overall performance and leadership abilities. By focusing on his substantive achievements and the context of his speech patterns, the narrative can shift towards a more fair and comprehensive assessment of his presidency.
Is this woman serious? Theyre still trying so hard to cover for him its pathetic
I left you two comments WSJ.
Amazing video, you work for 40yrs to have $1M in your retirement, meanwhile some people are putting just $10K into trading from just few months ago and now they are multimillionaires
Joe's always had weak moments, what's changed is the scrutiny; what a lacky.
How did he calm down anybody?
This is the complicit media doing what they do.
They’re saying we aren’t really seeing what we are seeing.
Who is this woman anyway?
Questions about whether he can do the job in two or three years? Stop this ridiculous treading on eggshells and confront the facts of today, yesterday and the past three years. Biden is already washed out, his condition is worsening and without a cure, while the countdown to the election is ticking very loud. This could end in a debilitating resort to constitutional means of resolving the impasse.
This is elder abuse, send him home
I like that his VP is Trump
The Democrats are doing an outstanding job at putting Trump back into the presidency.
If you have Democratic donors texting you, then how can you make any unbiased reporting 🤔
You mentioned his extensive experience with foreign policy but you didn't mention his mixup of Zelensky and Putin? It's sad that WSJ is playing kingmaker for Biden.
Absurd. We can trust our own eyes.
is there nobody to be president candidate now? lol
4 years and the dems never hard a plan. They sure should have known he can't beat time.
There are no questions about whether he can do this job in 2, 3 years. He obviously cannot do it right now, not another day. You, love, are the question. How come you are only noticing now?
Please maintain this format!
Say hello to President Trump again
Do people really think this man has done a good job what is wrong with people
Why US wants to meddle other countries internal issues. It is really none of US business. See what happen now. Pushing countries in division.
And US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Philippines and India, each of the respective country has a huge mountain of internal problems which have yet to resolve in their own countries.
Put him to bed now seriously
WE ARE SOLD OUT TO VOTING FOR PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN NO MATTER WHAT 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Disgrace makes America weak
QAnon Shaman for president
There is nothing deep in this old dude. He lied his way into politics and is now still lying. Shaneful.
Crazy how the video ends with they are going to want to shift the focus off Biden and put it on Trump…
next day Trump gets shot…
He also introduced Zelenski as Putin.
"is going to shift attention from biden and onto Trump"
Man this aged like fine wine
Why does he require preplanned reporters to call on? Trump never does that.
Your spot on. Hes at the top of his game. Hes got my vote. NOT!!
Biden has tested positive for covid, we probably won't see him again til November. Shocker
Can't wait for the next debate, this will show President Biden is not the same man that ran in 2020. I can't understand why people that are behind him at his rallies laugh when he makes a boo boo. It's sad, it's not funny!
Biden has never beaten President Trump. The 2020 election was rigged. The counting machines didnt work properly!
