Another Stunning European Country Introduces Digital Nomad Visa in November 2025

Slovenia has formally introduced a temporary residence permit for digital nomads, adding another option to Europe’s growing map of remote work destinations. The scheme took effect on November 21, 2025, following changes to the country’s Foreigners Act.

The permit is aimed at non-EU and non-EEA citizens who work remotely for employers or clients based outside Slovenia, or who are self-employed abroad. All work must be carried out remotely via digital technologies, and permit holders are not allowed to enter the Slovenian labor market or provide services to Slovenian companies.

The digital nomad residence permit is valid for up to one year and is non-renewable. After it expires, applicants must spend at least six months outside Slovenia before applying for a new digital nomad permit. However, those who decide to remain in the country on another basis, such as local employment, may apply for a different type of residence permit while their digital nomad status is still valid.

A key requirement is proof of sufficient means of subsistence. Applicants must demonstrate a monthly income of at least twice Slovenia’s average net salary, currently estimated at around €2,800–€3,200 per month, according to immigration and relocation advisers.

Other core conditions include a valid passport (typically with at least three months’ validity beyond the stay), comprehensive health insurance covering Slovenia, proof of remote work (employment contract, service contract, or business documentation), and a clean criminal record. Applications can be filed at Slovenian embassies or consulates abroad, or, for those already legally in the country, at local administrative units.

The program also allows immediate family reunification without a minimum prior residence period, a more flexible provision than many standard residence routes.

With this move, Slovenia joins other EU states such as Spain, Portugal, Malta, etc., hoping to attract remote workers, combining legal clarity for digital nomads with an economic boost from long-term international residents.
