Are fish smarter than we thought? | DW Documentary
Are fish really dumb, mute and unable to feel anything? Or is that just what people think? In recent years, scientists have been discovering more and more about the characteristics and abilities of these aquatic creatures.
Fish are generally regarded as mute, expressionless creatures without memory, feelings or even a sense of pain. In reality, however, they apparently have a lively social life, great adaptability and genuine emotions. ‘Thinking Outside the Tank! The Intelligence of Fish ’ is a humorous and educational journey of discovery through the wondrous world of water, from the goldfish bowl in the living room to exotic coral reefs and the turquoise lagoons of Moorea, an island in French Polynesia. The documentary also scrutinizes the relationship humans have with animals’ intelligence, in general.
Accompanied by goldfish Maurice, the film takes a deep dive into the colorful underwater world and explores what forms of intelligence may be hidden behind fins, scales and gills. From the smallest stream to the largest ocean, in aquariums and laboratories around the world, scientists are proving that fish are anything but limited.
For several years, researchers have been trying to understand what goes on in the minds of aquatic creatures. And the latest discoveries exceed all expectations. The documentary presents these astonishing findings and illustrates how fish perceive the world, communicate with each other and interact with their environment.
What does goldfish Maurice see? How does he react to touch? Does he have a sense of smell? Is he able to adapt to his environment, use tools and perhaps even feel emotions? Scientists in Portugal, Polynesia, Britain and Corsica provide answers to these exciting questions. The documentary’s animal protagonists include the empathetic zebrafish, the cichlid that fulfils its marital duties, the cleaner wrasse that recognizes itself in the mirror, the goldfish that can remember complex sequences for months and classify pieces of music according to genre, and the clever archerfish that can distinguish around 40 human faces. Who can doubt the intelligence of these fish?

Great documentary as always DW!
Yes. Its been proven gold fish have long term memories and can be trained. They even live for many many years. DON’T PUT YOUR GOLD FISH IN A BOWL.
Why does any of this matter?? What's the point of finding out??
To me, it's work for work sake with no productive end and well, just a complete waste of time and research money.
What I find very very remarkable is that the archerfish can recognise the side profile of a face after seeing only the frontal view of the face in 2D! The side view of the face is not even visible in 2D, yet they can tell from the profile with side view corresponds with which face. Absolutely amazing.
Maybe it’s time we rethink everything we thought we knew about fish, turns out they’re far more complex than we imagined
Fish don't have any gold or silver or palaces or yatch or ships or buy designer clothes or bags. They are content with what they have. Why? Because they have the ocean. Humans lack that vision.
If only they could talk. Don't think they'll have too many nice things to say about humans.
Of course fish feel pain and are intelligent. Try catching a wild trout by fly.
The music is not it dude.
I have 30 tanks at home and I swear some of my fish are something else.
DW,
Kindly include full original (NOT auto-generated) English subtitles.
Informative 👏👏
It's heckle fish's cousin

The "fish are stupid" and "only have 3 second memory" conclusions always annoyed me. It so obviously comes from human arrogance. Anybody who spent any time around fish, and actually paid attention, would know very quickly that they have intelligence
i have 14 fish tanks at home with a wide range of guppies and also my cherished rare betta macrostoma, if theres one thing i have realised while breeding and caring for them, it's that they are indeed very smart and do harbour their own unique personalities. i have learned to appreciate them greatly and i see them as my water puppies :3
People are fish – Hank Green
i get eaten by the worms and weird fishes
Awesome documentary!
The more I learn about animals, the worse I feel about eating meat.
True story: My home had a balcony that looked down onto a small pond with maybe a 4” waterfall with a very tiny and shallow pond. I often sat on my balcony and looked down at the fish. On several occasions I noticed one on my goldfish hovering below the small water fall looking up as if it was curious about what was up there. Then the big day arrived as I was looking down I saw Lola (my goldfish) circle the pond, picking up speed and then up she went into the tiny pond which was too shallow for Lola and she plopped herself back into the pond. I swear she had curiosity, and then developed a plan to explore. She lived many years but I never saw her give it a shot again but who knows. People have looked skeptically when I tell the story, but I stand by it.
There are some recorded cases in Finland about next thing. Carp bream swarm goes along small river, and sees a fishing net. They stop, as if they are keeping a meeting themselves. Then the biggest ones go under the net, lift them up, then the rest of the swarm goes under it, and then the biggest ones.
1:00 what fish is that?
Thank god for fish
