How Serious is Iran’s Threat to Disrupt Shipping in the Red Sea?
Iran’s recent threats to disrupt shipping in the Bab al-Mandab Strait—a key global shipping route often referred to as the “Gate of Tears”—have raised alarms about escalating tensions in the region. This strategic chokepoint connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is crucial for international trade, particularly for energy exports from the Gulf states.
In a bold proclamation, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has indicated its intention to leverage this vital waterway as a new front in its ongoing conflict with the United States. The military organization warned that regional energy exports would be ‘either for everyone or for no one’, suggesting that it could employ its Houthi allies in Yemen to block shipping routes if tensions with the US continue to rise.
This comes on the heels of a fragile diplomatic situation, wherein a recent agreement aimed at de-escalating hostilities between the US and Iran now hangs in the balance. With the Houthi militia already engaged in a protracted conflict in Yemen, the potential for them to block navigation through Bab al-Mandab amplifies concerns over maritime security and economic stability in the region.
Presenting a nuanced discussion on this topic, host Sami Zeidan engages experts in maritime strategy and regional policy. Among the guests is Ali Ahmadi, an Executive Fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, who delves into the geopolitical implications of Iran’s actions. Ian Ralby, a Senior Fellow at the Center for Maritime Strategy, provides insight into the security challenges that arise from escalating military tensions in these critical waterways. Rounding out the discussion is Farea Al Muslimi, a Research Fellow at Chatham House, who offers a perspective on how this development affects the broader Middle Eastern landscape and its global repercussions.
The potential disruption of shipping in the Red Sea poses serious risks not only for the immediate region but also for the global economy, which is intricately tied to energy exports. A blockade or any significant military action in this vital transit point could spike oil prices, disrupt supply chains, and heighten global economic uncertainty.
As geopolitical maneuvering continues, the implications of Iran’s threats remain to be fully realized. The stakes are high in this volatile region, making it imperative for the international community to monitor developments closely. The situation underscores the delicate interplay of military power, regional alliances, and global trade dynamics, raising questions about the future stability of the Red Sea and beyond.

Inshallah Iran 🇮🇷 winning 🎉
well there is no reason for escalation , again the Hormuz channel belongs to Iran , what Iran decides to do with that channel is up to the Iranian people , but again under international law , attacks on Israel , the Arab nations under GCC council , America , China or frankly any other country , that is illegal , attacks on Iran are also unnecessary , war in that part of the world is unnecessary , there has to be long term solution and viable agreements . There is no reason to attack Iran . The issues over the Hormuz channel , Greenland , Gaza and maybe even east Europe , whatever the case is , there has to be win/win agreements and reforms , not military victories or excessive demands .
Hi man I don't support Iran's regime , I don't support Iranian missile attacks on Kuwait or Israel or whatever , its illegal and reckless but hi man the Hormuz channel belongs to Iran , its part of Iran , and if the disagreements can be solved through a win/win agreement where Iran recognizes it as international waterway and ends its missile attacks , than that is a win/win for the region

You need to be careful of Fake News Media and warmongers these days. There's difference between terrorizing the Strait and closing or blocking the Strait. As we speak, the lunatics call IRGC are running from one underground residential building to another and have vacated Islands of Qeshm, Bandar Abbas, Tunb because they've been terribly bombed and turning desolate. The truth is the lunatics are just terrorizing the Strait not closing it
