Australia to ban children from using social media
In a groundbreaking move, Australia is planning to ban children from using social media due to the perceived “mental health consequences”. The legislation, set to be enforced by the end of the year, will establish a minimum age requirement for accessing popular platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
While the exact age restriction has not been disclosed by the government, it is expected to fall within the range of 14 to 16 years old, with the Australian prime minister leaning towards the higher end of that spectrum. Prime Minister Antony Alabanese has described social media usage among children as a “scourge”, emphasizing the importance of young individuals engaging in real-life interactions with their peers.
The decision to limit children’s access to social media is rooted in concerns about the negative impact these platforms can have on mental well-being, such as increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Alabanese’s stance reflects a growing recognition of the potential harm that excessive screen time and online interactions can have on young people’s development.
By implementing age restrictions on social media use, Australia is taking a proactive approach to safeguarding the mental health and well-being of its youth. The move aligns with broader efforts to prioritize real-world connections and experiences over virtual interactions, encouraging children to engage in more meaningful and authentic relationships offline.
As the debate around the impact of social media on mental health continues to intensify, Australia’s decision to regulate children’s access to these platforms represents a significant step towards promoting a healthier and more balanced relationship with technology. With the implementation of this legislation, the country hopes to instill a greater sense of responsibility and mindfulness in young individuals when it comes to their online presence and digital interactions.

YES!! FINALLY
YES! Didn't expect the Australian government to have the sense to pull this.
Good.
They will find other reasons to be on their device.
Digital ID nanny state evangelists performing a nudgathon , and thats just the kids nowadays
Good job Australia! 👏
The minimum age should be 18 really.
Will they ban YouTube? Or just what they want to ban?
superb move..
Honestly so true. Should be allowed when you're 16
not for government to dictate where does it end?
Social media sites haven't done enough to moderate their own platforms. Many adults fall down social media rabbit holes so I can understand why such a ban might be necessary to protect children. Also if there is such a ban there needs to be a component of education associated with it. Like when a child does become old enough to use social media they should be able to navigate the fake and toxic stuff on there, and on the internet in general. That means learning skills such as critical thinking.
Personally a ban would not be my first choice. I think governments should make social media sites do more to enforce their own policies and provide better education for children on how to use social media etc, and also maybe even provide courses for those adults still willing to learn.
Social Media is definitely not for adolescent or young people below the age of 18. I regret using it during my formative years. I could've done better in academics if i didn't procrastinate on social media then. Sigh, wish i could turn back time. I regret it really
This is the result of every society where the government always has to be the parent of its children since the actual parents were just concerned in making babies to maybe save face.
And ban the under 30s from posting on social media (though not reading).
I recently deleted majority of the apps (and social media) from my phone. I was feeling overwhelmed and stressed, as if i was wasting my time. I've noticed that since I have quit, majority of my college peers can't shy away from their phones every few minutes.
Just fantastic! Governments actually doing something helpful for citizens! Bravo, Australia!
every country that has social media should do the same
Absolutely support this. Social media is damaging society and more importantly children.
Smart! USA would never do this. They would whine too much.
same country locked them all up unnecessarily recently and banned footy and tennis – if you think this is for the kids own good then you are deluded, its the slippery slope.
Very sensible.
Children should ban Australia
Great idea. Two young ones in my family have been slaves to social media since they were about 10. It was socially VERY harmful…All well now, pretty much so anyway.
Fat chance of that working, but it will introduce to kids at a young age how to disrupt, and hack restrictive systems, nice way to build a underground movement.
Great move 👏🏻
Fantastic news ! now children can be safe from corruption and grooming.
The amount of perversion on social media is horrendous.
Truly a gateway to corn, debauchery and indoctrination.
What’s with yr screwed up face presenter ???? Spot on Australia!!!! It’s all a loud a shite !
At last. UK please follow.
Now ban boomers from Facebook
BABYLON FALLING
LONG OVERDUE
A lot of dumb people in this comment section think this isn't enforceable, when actually it's very easy to enforce. The government will simply mandate that social media platforms require their users to provide proof of ID to get an account. These regulations are already in effect for all sorts of finance and banking apps. If you want to get a Wise account, you have to provide photo ID and then take a photo of your face so they can verify that it's actually you. The very same thing could be implemented for social media platforms without much difficulty at all.
Can we do the same in England please? 16 years.
Wants them to get out and meet real people, with vans and packets of sweets and…..
Social media platforms are not suitable environments for children.
That's not a bad thing unsocial media has done damage
Hallelujah! The whole lot of it is trash. Even for adults. Toxic rubbish.
Social media is dying anyway
What's with the 480p resolution in BBC videos?
How are they going to police it, you think kids won't find an angle??
I like you Australia.
Australia already prevents its children from being slaughtered in school shootings…how much freedom are they gonna take from them?
A-BLOODY-MEN!
Let's have it the world over.
Excellent news
Well done Australia. Children must be protected from the scourge of sicial media
I guess the Auzzies love their nanny state.
This is not an issue the state can legislate. And to ask the state to intervene at this level is quite intrusive.
How about banning children from buying sugary and fattening foods, they have a much bigger negative impact on children's health than social media does
Why not ban all of Australia from using social media, if it's bad for children than it's bad for adults also.
