In a recent turn of events, Canada and Mexico have managed to avoid the anticipated “Liberation Day” tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. After weeks of tension and uncertainty, these North American neighbors have come out relatively unscathed from what could have been a detrimental trade war. However, the threat of tariffs still looms over Canada, leaving many on edge about the potential impact on their livelihoods.
The province of southwestern Ontario, in particular, faces a high risk due to Trump’s trade policies. The Conference Board of Canada has highlighted the vulnerability of communities in this region, shedding light on the concerns of workers who fear the repercussions of the tariffs. The uncertainty surrounding the future of trade relations with the U.S. has left many wondering about the fate of their jobs and industries.
One industry that could be significantly affected by Trump’s tariffs is the beef industry, which supports over 340,000 jobs in Canada. The prospect of losing access to key export markets could lead to a drastic reduction in the workforce, posing a threat to the livelihoods of many beef producers. Heather Yourex-West speaks with some of these producers to understand the potential impact on their businesses and the challenges they may face in the coming months.
In a separate development, the entertainment industry mourns the loss of actor Val Kilmer, known for his iconic roles in films such as ‘Batman Forever,’ ‘Tombstone,’ and ‘Top Gun.’ Kilmer’s untimely death at the age of 65 due to pneumonia has left fans and colleagues in mourning. Eric Sorensen reflects on Kilmer’s diverse talent and the legacy he leaves behind as one of Hollywood’s most underrated leading men.
As Canada navigates the uncertainties of a turbulent trade landscape, the resilience and adaptability of its industries will be put to the test. Despite dodging the recent tariffs, the looming threat of further trade disputes with the U.S. serves as a stark reminder of the challenges ahead. Stay tuned as developments unfold and Canada continues to navigate the complexities of global trade relations.

Mark Carney is SO disappointed that Trump isn't the Evil Entity against Canada that Carney wanted. In fact, Carney is still pretending that tariffs are THE issue. But we all know that 10 years of Liberal economic failure is the issue!
Trump gave Canada a break, and Global News is still trying to scare Canadians that more tariffs are coming. Pretty sure that's the end of it
don”t worry it is coming soon
Yeah the sparing will be short lived. If Carney wins Trump will bring out the P diddy oil. Carney will sell out Canada in a heartbeat. He was a disaster during Brexit.
What escapes people is that other country's tariffs against the United States is offset by the United States benefiting from their holdings of U.S. debt and holding of assets within the United States. Tariffs are backfiring on the United States because if nations cannot profits through trade with the United States and through their assets in a recessionary United States, and through holding U.S. debt suffering real rates of return when there are better opportunities they do not want to have anything to do with the United States. Money will go to where it is better treated and that is exactly what is happening. There is a change in the global order going on and Donald Trump has just incentivized the rest of the world to speed up their divorce from the United States. Hence Canada' long over due talk of diversifying its trade.
Rather than revive U.S. export industry to be more competitive all he is doing is isolating U.S. industrial production to its own domestic market and making it more expensive for Americans.
Tell David Akin to stuff his Liberal bias – PP was "Team Canada" while the Libs were still hating on flag-wavers and denouncing our history.
Why should we be taxed on incoming USA goods we order, just because Trump is taxing his citizens. These leaders give names to their taxes, like Liberation Day tariffs(taxes) or Canada's Retaliatory tariffs (taxes). Taxes are Taxes. How about instead, "Canadian leader's sneaky tax grab tariffs.
This is the last thing I expected!
Trump knows he Needs Canada and Mexico for trade and loves to play Drama teacher like Trudeau sometimes
I just want to inform voters working in heavy industries that Carney's industrial carbon tax increased on April 1st. This industrial carbon tax will destroy Canadian Industries and drive businesses south
U.S. foreign policy is shifting towards focusing on China and Russia.
Thank you Danielle Smith for encouraging the US to hold off on many of the Canadian tariffs.
How much of this is just for public approval?
Trump is liberating American consumers from their money…… Boycott USA!
Trump like Fake people hide behind the flag , like them convoy truckers 2022 !
PP is getting more and more to be a Canadian then be a Televangelist ,MAGA Treasonous Trumpper !
At least I agree on the “Liberation day” part. Liberation of people in other countries being taken advantage of to produce products at way lower cost due to them having much less wage than if they were if they work in the state.
Instead of paying less $5 a day for someone to produce in a foreign country they can pay someone minimum wage of at least $7.25/hr to produce in the state
Tariffs with Canada and Mexico would hurt the U.S. , just as much as Mexico and Canada. Do not think this is the end of the tariff threats, he likes using that card too much.
In my humble opinion, one of the most important days in US history was November 5, 2024, and not the best one.
Cattle industry needs to go. We can be leaders in lab-grown meat, and secure a real competitive advantage on the rest of the world. We certainly have the brain power, resources and capacity to do it.
Environmental regulations are very important. If you can't even breathe ok somewhat clean air I guess, then what does anything at all matter? I don't trust Pierre for one second. In fact my gut is never wrong and it's saying don't vote him in. We can't make same mistake as States did and think about ourselves only. All of Canada matters and so does the planet itself.
Liberal Media is disgustingly biased.
May Love Peace Prevail In The World….
Good God. Why is the world waiting with bated breath to hear what Trump says and does…..the guys nuts….surprised he still breathing…..just saying
Countries who retaliated the USA tariffs game like Mark Carney – failed their country. USA’s grace landed onto Canada and Mexico either way. Lucky
Trump is the worst evil ever.
