Global National: April 17, 2026
In a dramatic turn of events, Iran has declared that the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open” for commercial vessels, a vital passage for global oil shipments. This announcement comes despite U.S. President Donald Trump maintaining a strong blockade of Iranian ports. Trump insists that the blockade remains firmly in place, refuting any claims that Iran’s change in policies is linked to the recent U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. While Iran’s reopening of the strait may offer a glimmer of hope for the resumption of oil flow, Trump emphasizes the necessity of a comprehensive peace deal to ensure long-term stability in the region. Remond Shannon provides an in-depth analysis of the situation and its potential implications for the global oil market.
The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon is generating cautious optimism among some Lebanese citizens, who dare to dream of a lasting peace. However, this sentiment is met with skepticism as many believe the peace talks have come too late, overshadowed by the significant human toll of recent conflicts. Candice Cole reports on the deep scars left behind by the violence, highlighting the impact on civilians and their aspirations for a brighter future amidst uncertainty.
On the home front, Canada Post has initiated a significant transition affecting mail delivery across the nation. The postal service announced that thirteen communities will shift to centralized mailboxes this year, leaving behind traditional door-to-door delivery for approximately 136,000 addresses. As Andrea MacPherson explains, this move is just the beginning of a larger plan to phase out home mail delivery, sparking conversations about accessibility and community connection.
In a call for urgent action, advocates for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls are urgently addressing the situation in Manitoba. Protesters are demanding accountability from the provincial government and child welfare agencies, expressing concerns that too many Indigenous children are living in unsafe conditions. Despite millions of dollars allocated for child welfare, systemic issues remain unaddressed, leading to a crisis that demands immediate attention. Melissa Ridgen reports from Winnipeg, where the community is rallying together for improved care and support for vulnerable children.
As these stories unfold, each presents a unique snapshot of the challenges and changes facing society today.

Trump forces Iran to open the strait and iran agreed !
Trump blocks iran ports to force Iran to sign !
Not sure if Canadian media love Iran or hate Trump, but it seems they are trying to hind the positive dynamic from Trump, that makes them look dishonest.
What lead Israel to attack Hezbolla? Why are civilians dying? Is it because Hezbolalla are in amongst the civilians? Global “news” is one sided garbage..
Any liberals here to do your usual trump bashing no matter if it is good or bad? You guys still think he is orange for some odd reason?

Ford is ACTING like Donald Trump and Kristi Noem's. Stop him! He doesn't need a damn private plane. Canada string 🇨🇦
Ford is more a Liberal than a Conservative, total hypocrite.

Janssen sight).
A.I. is the death of woke deranged Hollywood actors, let's all celebrate !
Doug Ford needs to go!
I thought the strait was fully open before the US and Israel attacked Iran? Has anything really positive been gained from this war? I mean-apart from deflecting from the Epstein files and making billions from manipulating the markets. For sure, the American people have benefitted negatively through increased inflation (also from the stupid tariffs), higher fuel prices, restricted travel (by plane). But the ultra-rich got another tax-cut! By the way, the deficit is just increasing and fighting with the Pope is just beyond the pale. Seeking moral high ground whilst killing innocent civilians is both desperate and futile.
Guess commie carney won’t be sending our powerful rowboat to the gulf
So why are no ships going through still hmmm weird why did the ford turn around?
Aaaand it's closed again.
only peace deal americans deserve is their data centers in the middle east. mysteriously blowing up…
lebanon fired on 3 hours ago, ceasefire is broken and iran is not responding to this treasonous behaviour
You do realize that there is an unlimited amount of oil and that Canada has some of the most oil in the world. Along with soft lumber, minerals etc. Canada could be the richest country in the world., and yet, the government strips it clean and sends our tax dollars abroad while keeping the country underdeveloped why would that be?
Never trust trump, he’ll go back on his words and break the ceasefire.
So, basically, I need to reduce how hard I'm working and the number of hours I work. That way my income can drop and fall into this lower bracket and then I get it all back for free. I will get taxpayer money to pay for my groceries, dental, and get access to all the other programs where they get free handouts. This is getting absolutely ridiculous. We have to stop encouraging people to not work while we just hand them out everything they need.
Point 2: we've been giving Indigenous people an extraordinary amount of money for a ridiculous number of years, and yet they continue to complain that nothing is changing and nothing has improved. This is because it needs to be changed from within. Money will never help it. Therefore, we should stop giving this money completely. If assistance is needed, it should be provided in mental health services and education. But zero cash handouts.
Yeah sure….😂😂
" bombs killed our smart people"
