France has finally broken its political deadlock with the appointment of Michel Barnier as the new prime minister by President Emmanuel Macron. After over 50 days of a caretaker government, Barnier’s selection brings an end to the uncertainty that has plagued the country. However, the decision has also sparked a new political crisis as it lacks support from the left, which emerged victorious in recent snap polls.
According to Paul Smith, an associate professor of French studies at Nottingham University, Barnier’s appointment is likely to ignite tensions within the government and further divide the political landscape in France. With the left feeling sidelined and excluded from decision-making processes, it is evident that Barnier’s leadership will face significant challenges in unifying the nation.
As France grapples with economic and social challenges exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for a stable and effective government is more pressing than ever. Barnier’s tenure as prime minister will be closely scrutinized as he navigates these turbulent waters and attempts to steer the country towards recovery.
Overall, while Barnier’s appointment marks the end of one political crisis in France, it appears to have set the stage for a new chapter of uncertainty and discord in the country’s political landscape. The coming months will be crucial in determining the success of his leadership and the future direction of France under his administration.

Brexit deal didn’t work so Barnier will profit nothing
Jobs for the boys
A bit odd. Surely the largest party gets to choose the PM
Maybe Barnier can star the new James Bond movie?
It seems like part of a concerted current trend across a number of governments – for example Spain, Germany and Canada in recent days at least pretending to adopt harder lines against mass immigration to try to reduce support for the far right. If by selecting Barnier Macron is signalling a harder line on immigration he's only doing the same as Sanchez, Trudeau, Schulz and others are doing as well. Doesn't mean they are serious about it of course. They are, however, fanatically determined to try to stop people voting far right so it does concentrate their minds.
Macron is embarrassing himself. Better to call for a new election
EPP for the win
But isn't prime minister supposed to be accepted by the parliament?
Will he last half a day??😅
Who better than an unelected bureaucrat to lead a government that no one elected?
French politics are a dumpster fire. Macron makes deals and stabs those he made deaks with in the back. He breaks promises, breaks agreements, breaks deals…why would anyone or any nation trust him or his govt?
So stupid.
