The small border town of Boten in Laos has seen a significant transformation in recent years, becoming a Chinese enclave within Laotian territory. This change comes as a result of Beijing’s New Silk Road initiative, with the completion of the Boten-Vientiane line in April 2023 marking a major milestone in this project.
The high-speed train connecting Vientiane to southern China has not only reduced travel time between the two regions but has also opened up Laos to increased trade and economic opportunities. However, the $6 billion project was funded by China, leaving Vientiane in debt to its neighbor.
As a result, more Chinese-funded infrastructure projects are now underway in Boten and other parts of Laos, further solidifying China’s presence in the region. The terminus of the high-speed rail link in Boten has led to the town becoming a hub for Chinese businesses and investments, turning it into a Chinese enclave within Laotian territory.
This growing Chinese influence in Laos has raised concerns about the country’s sovereignty and economic dependence on China. While the new infrastructure projects bring potential economic benefits, they also come with challenges and implications for the future of Laos.
Overall, the transformation of Boten into a Chinese enclave serves as a stark reminder of the complex dynamics at play in the region, as countries like Laos navigate the opportunities and risks of participating in China’s ambitious New Silk Road initiative.

Goal of the Chinese
This would be reported completely differently if it was the US investing in Laos instead of China. France is a puppet state of the US.
France got kicked out of south asia and now got jelous on china. 😂
What a ridiculous media.
A French propaganda media crying after they have been kicked out of Laos and IndoChina after years of stealing, looting, and enslaving locals. Don’t worry about Laos there is plenty to be fixed in France.
😂 USA propaganda network
Chinese population is coming there to take that land
Chinese have claim that land finish
havent paid for a year?????
Debt trap diplomacy
just jealous, it's better to develop with cooperation between neighbors
People often speak about Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar or maybe Malaysia when it comes to China's influence in modern Asia but there is no country in Asia that has been so greatly influenced by China in the modern era than Laos. Laos is representative of modern Chinese influence in Asia. Boten is one place where the Laotian kip and Chinese yuan are both accepted but even more interesting is the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ), while not tied specifically to the Chinese government, it's being run by a Chinese kingpin. Chinese cultural influence is widespread in the zone as Chinese people, including traders and investors have contributed to the development of the zone. The GTSEZ is inhabited by Laotians, Chinese, Thais, Burmese, Indians and Vietnamese who are engaged in business in the area.
Like it or not, China is the dominant power in Asia today.
Laos was once a colony under France IndoChina control, now it is gone. 🤣
It is quite clear to everyone that these people would be much better off without the railway, but with democracy, freedom and values (as Ursula teaches us)!
I admit the Zionist are really powerful.. controlling all hhe médias in the world demand enormous ingeniouty
China is not as smart as France. France doesn't need to build railways, hospitals, schools, power stations, anything, but it has enclaves all over Africa and around the world. Speaking of prostitution, how many African children have been raped by French soldiers on the glorious UN peacekeeping missions? Did any of these criminals pay the price they deserve? Or be punished?
2man is not happy why coz is clear😂😂😂😂😂.look them seems very poor😂. poor mentality😂 even his t short may made china.😂
European are now in coma 😅
All roads including Europe's 🤣
When i heard high speed rail its already bad journalist.. that thing is SEMI high speed
Wow , China is really doing good and other countries are getting benefitted from China.
This is a very selective , malicious reporting, purposefully missing out the tremendous export trade , tourism industry Laos is gaining on China.
This article instead focus and zoom in on vice activities.
Another run of the mill gaslighting job.
Be careful please, you will go the way BBC did, slowly but surely losing your credibility.
Sore loser's always twist to portray things as bad as possible..
French documentary narrated by the British accented narrator, the godfather of all the past colonialists.
The natives are being displace and the Chinese are moving in taking over the businesses and investing making them the landlords. Also all the signs are in chinese because the chinese won’t learn the local language. The video said it was Laos not China.🇱🇦
I've been there. Some locals actually use bomb shells as ornaments because that's how heavily bombed they were by the US. I saw a crater in someone's garden, was because a bomb went off two decades after the war had ended. Beautiful country but there isn't many touristy things to do there.
France is finally being expelled from Africa after centuries of explotation of natural resources and people in these regions.
5:10 what Chinese history? China is the theft of cultures , having no history but Manchurian and Mongolian ‘s history 🤣🤣🤣
Laos people and government welcome all nations to invest in Laos but so far only China is actively doing the investment….you can't blame them
The europeans always finds a way to report things upside down lmao
The European France 24 prefers Laos to be permanently poor! France has HSR so it can help Laos to build more HSR too and create more jobs if the French cares about the people in Laos.
Many South East Asian countries are lured to Economic trap
Without a single gold mine France have 2000+ tons of gold reserve😂😂😂
Wow, using paid actors and blurry images, c’mon it’s 2024, ffs do something right france
Its far better than west colonial strategy to capture land and minerals
Full support China ❤
Please do a documentary on how Europeans exploited this countries and left them with nothing. Economic developments must always come with some minor negative developments, however, unlike how most western media like to portray china, we have seen significant improvement in our quality of lives in places like Africa, better infrastructure, cheap technology items like TV, fridge, smartphones. This has really helped in business development in the developing world. China is the future for the developing world without any doubts
People in another world making choices. Good for them.
Chinese economic miracle? You do realize they are collapsing?
China🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳🇨🇳😍😍
Paris is next
People in both sides of the border are closely related in family blood lines.
America and the west doesnt invest or build anything for others. Their entire economic model is based on predatory deals. That way of doing business won't work in todays climate. The west isnt the only option anymore
French colonized Lao before didn’t built a railroad for Lao, making a short film mocks China.
"the whole world is becoming more Chinese".. what a depressing statement 😪
But at what cost?
China knows what works, the railroad to Tibet proved that.
But at what cost? This question brought to you by the National Endowment for Democracy.
