By car from Madrid to Marrakech – Road trip back home | DW Documentary
The same spectacle every summer: Hundreds of thousands of vehicles leaving Spain, headed for Morocco. In the summer of 2024, many of the travelers were migrants. Living in Europe, vacationing in their home country. But what does “home” really mean?
The term “home” is becoming increasingly complicated. More and more people are blending different identities. People who belong to migrant groups increasing live out this “multiple identity,” as people who feel they have more than one “home”.
How does this identity work? What do people experience when they leave their homes in Spain every summer, to visit their homes in Morocco? In 2024, 3.4 million people crossed the strait from Algeciras to Tangier. The ferries transported over 800,000 vehicles in the three summer months – a record.
This road movie accompanies some of these people on their journey, arrival, and as they spend their summer in their country of origin. The caravan serves as a kind of bridge between homes. Older people tend to long for their homeland, while younger ones often find it difficult to reconcile their new world with their roots.

That is the truth most of the people do not want to know.morocco is rich and strategic country is also full of billionaires but too selfish lucking social justices may Allah guide us and them too to the right ways.we must be human before the cements and brick blocks.
Thank you for showing « the dark side of Morocco » somewhat exaggerated to get more sensational.
Repressive state, secret service, minister, quite scary! But we left after an hour…
Pressing the lady to say that she married under duress when obviously she appears to be in a successful union, not sure we can say the same about the reporter😉
Overall thank you sincerely for taking us on this interesting trip.
Yeah thanks DW for making this horrendous documentary. And trying to paint Morocco the same as it was in the 1990s. Here’s some facts you forgot to thrown in.
– No, the king doesn’t rule authoritarian. We have a constitutional monarchy with a democratically elected cabinet and government which holds significant power.
– You try to paint Morocco as if it’s a lawless desert with only ghettos. Yet Moroccan infrastructure ranks above the world’s average and above multiple European countries.
– Our average salary is higher than some countries in Europe as well yet you don’t bring that up either.
– the Moroccan diaspora isn’t that big there are a few million living in Europe which a majority where born there and their parents or grandparents where brought there as guest workers. The diaspora is way smaller than the Italian diaspora or Polish diaspora.
The Western mind cant comprehend that arranged marriages could work 😂😂
This documentary truly touched my heart. Watching Moroccan families living in Spain return to their homeland to reunite with loved ones—especially their grandmothers—was both emotional and deeply relatable. The joy, nostalgia, and love they carry for their roots is something that transcends borders.
It reminded me of my own journey—leaving my beloved Argentina to come to the United States alone. I know that bittersweet feeling of building a life in a new land while carrying your homeland in your heart every single day. The love for where we come from never fades. No matter how far we go, it always calls us back in the most tender ways.
Thank you, DW Documentary, for capturing this universal emotion so beautifully.
"we suffer more than we can bear" — heartbreaking words.
why on earth are they only showing the traditional side?
Morocco is not as bad as how this documentairy in a way want or tries or perhaps "unintentionally" portrays. You can do better DW
Imagine a group of reporters from China or Russia go to Europe and want to film poor people living in slums / ghetto, whatever they are called, in Paris or in Berlin or in London. Of course, the poor people there would say that they want changes. What else they would say? Would they say that everything are perfect?
And how would the French/German police react?.I do not think they would welcome the Chinese/Russian reporters with open-arm, because the reporters are going to tell the world the facts (another side of facts) about their countries.
Sneaky DW
Please do your research before casting blanket statements like the mosque space. It makes look like a rookie reporter, which you might be.
Additionally, in our religion, a woman does not have to sleep with the whole town before she chooses who she marries.
This was insightful. A gentlemen from the Moroccan Air Force had told me how many Moroccan’s spoke Spanish and French, now I understand why.
As an American I had no idea so many Moroccans live in Europe and journey every summer back to their home country. So sad how many people risk their lives to get to Europe.
The Eu isn't paradise, i know many eu people that want to leave europe living paycheck to paycheck or even worse, taking one bad example to paint the whole country as bad, you've got nerves
Morocco is by far not freedom of the press heaven, that’s a fact. But the example shown here to make that point was really weak and feels like white savior BS and an acute lack of understanding of local customs. The warden’s job is literally to check on people and keep track of new information, that’s how the security system works. You may not agree with it, but you’re obligated to respect it. You make claims that the state doesn’t want you to report on the dark side of Morocco, but here we are watching this, so I’m a little confused. After all, they let you go with this footage. I’m inclined to dismiss your claims just due to this. Quick search on YouTube shows tons of videos about Morocco’s dark side, including casa slums. This is why people don’t want to believe media when it matters; this type of dramatized reporting. A disappointing one by DW. And the whole thing was all over the place, one moment it’s about the poor migrants, then it’s the rich textile magnate then it’s the kids of the slums. What was the message? Morocco’s a poor country and people want better? Shocking.
Why men and women don't get the "same amount of space" in mosques is because men MUST go to the mosque and pray there if they live within 10 minutes of walking distance to the mosque. Women get WAAAAAY more reward for praying at home and are not obliged to go to the mosque except on friday prayer.
Did she just say "if you're poor in Spain, you can survive. In Morocco you can't" In Europe, in terms of family, you'll be on your own starving. In Africa, you don't have to starve because of family
That is a big mistake that journalists make they go to different countries and they start filming documentaries with out permits that is not right!! Most countries don’t allow it 😊
I was in contact with a moroccan women last year and her family were amazing, she had horses and shared alot of her lifestyle with me,Morocco is not the terrible place these immigrants say it is.
Yes you are right Women praying areas are smaller than men's for many reasons, mostly women are required to pray at home, and there is more reward for men to pray jointly in a group while women can pray one by one
Please tell me who choose ur Playlist? Who is ur music editor??
The same thing happens in the United States. We Mexicans make a similar journey to Mexico. Especially during Christmas you'll see the caravans of vehicles going south and meeting up in the major border towns like Laredo Texas. Been doing it for 25 years from Chicago to Morelia Michoacan. It takes me about 38 hours.
Yes, there is a tradition that Moroccans go to Morocco in the summer, for example, my uncle comes to us from the Netherlands, prohibits gifts.
