Canada to Lease Government Land for Affordable Housing Development

Canada Housing Minister Sean Fraser, alongside Public Services Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, announced in Halifax on Sunday the Canada Public Land Bank initiative. The program features 56 federal properties that have been identified as being able to support housing, including five new properties intended for leasing and are ready for builders to submit their plans.

“Where there are lands that can be made available for housing, we want to deploy them for that purpose as part of the solution to the housing crisis,” Fraser said. Part of the plan includes “long-term leases of up to 99 years for as little as a dollar, in exchange for a commitment from builders that they’re going to make homes available at prices that low-income families can afford, and that middle class families can afford,” the housing minister stated. This initiative aims to provide more affordable housing options for Canadians in need.
