Cartels in Ecuador | DW Documentary
Long one of the safest countries in South America, Ecuador is at risk of becoming a narco-state. 1,300 people were murdered in the first 50 days of 2025. This film follows victims’ families, documenting their strength as they fight for democracy.
“Ecuador is transforming into a country in which stealing and killing is good business,” says Amanda Villavicencio, daughter of well-known investigative journalist and former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio Valencia. He fought against corruption and cartels — and was assassinated in broad daylight in 2023. Amanda and her sister Tamia mourn their father’s loss by continuing his fight. In December 2024, a surveillance camera caught how four children, ranging in age from 11 to 15, were abducted by men in military uniforms. A few days later, their bodies were found near a military facility. Paul Moposita, a rapper and political performance artist, composed a song which not only elegized the murdered youths but also called on people to resist the violence. Together with the victims’ families, he held a demonstration at the place where the last images of these children were filmed. As Tamia Villavicencio says, “Right now, our greatest fear is that everything stays the way it is.”
The documentary Cartels in Ecuador delves into the tense and violent situation in the country ahead of the second round of Ecuador’s presidential election on April 13, 2025.

Ecuador and Venezuela grieve me deeply; both countries have fallen into the hands of criminal and terrorist gangs. I am a citizen of both countries, and like many others, I have had to migrate primarily due to violence, but also due to many other structural problems that prevent these nations from moving forward, despite their natural resources.
Good topic because in all part of South american have cartel and govermment do part ,this cartel.
When competent leaders like bukele arrest and torture gangs you criticize them including media now what do you want😊

God rest the souls of the innocents and bring them Justice. God help the survivors.
I write this comment as another migrant who had to flee persecution and death threats from people who obeyed the cartels. That's right, this is the truth, from a decent citizen, with complete ethics and impeccable values, who comes from a family that has never seen jail or touched a cent from anyone. I had to flee from those who wanted to harm me and claimed to be from the criminal gang "Los Choneros" and other supposedly capital investors who wanted me to help them launder their illicit money. I had to endure all of this until I said enough. My peace was worth more than all the money in the world, and I fled. Now I'm a refugee in another country, living fully without any danger with my family, and all I can say is that Ecuador has been sold out to the cancer of the world, to the mafia, to narco-socialism, and we have lost all dignity. This cancer is very advanced, and I don't believe there is a human being on earth who can save the country from all this. Villavicencio defied them and pointed his finger at them, but look how it ended. May God have mercy on our country.
7:32 are words from peruvian writer Jose Maria Arguedas… Its great that his influence is alive in Ecuador
The documentary is fine. But you present a consequence and attribute the cause to anything. If you did this, you should responsibly investigate the background leading up to this problem.
Philippines is in similar situation,. the main difference is they where able to Elect the former President Duterte.. Cops, Politicians & Drug Lords are in it together,. You cannot touch the Drug Lords and Drug Pushers because they are protected by the politicians, the police is the right hand man of the Drug Lords & Politicians.. Drugs are rampant you can buy drugs like Candy in the streets of the Philippines,. Drug Addicts will rape even a four year old girl and when they didn't have money to buy drugs they will commit crime.. Politicians who's business got affected because of Duterte are now using ICC.. this is how stupid ICC is.. getting drag and getting use by corrupt politicians of Philippines because they want validation that they are an organization even if they are not Elected by any Population in this Planet..
Эта желтая оправа очков убивает ..
That place is new El Salvador

Ecuador used to be considered a safe country (by Latin American standards). Now it's as much a disaster as everywhere else in Latin America. Real shame. Unfortunately in Latin America only (some) dictators clean things up. The governments are corrupt and dangerous.
Why didn't this man have security?
its politic even in other countries as third countries those politician accused will attack also the one initiate the accusation ,very common to latin america
dear dw you fail to say WHO allowed narcos to freely enter the country his name was rafael correa delgado, a president that stayed in power for 10 years, that ordered the killing of reporters and people from the military!
Correa forced the us army base to leave manta in order to allow narcos to establish themselves here !
During correas government we saw the increase of violence, change of constitution and laws that gave less years to crimes like robbery, narcotrafic ect!
all of your documentaries fail to mention this corrup ex president
They need Bukele
Even in my own country, there is possibility violence when there’s is election, can not rely on police proctection
I wish that my country will be led one day by a competent leader. As Ecuadorians, I also wish that we return to our roots and become more united than ever before. Finally, I hope that one day I can return home. The people currently living in Ecuador have my utmost respect simply for living day to day an facing this narco state.
There's never any focus on the consumers. No demand, no supply and violence.
This doc definitely needed to be longer. I’m happy that Ecuador is being highlighted for what is taking place because these events are out of character for the country and the people. I pray change comes and it returns to the country of peace it was named.
This is what the American people wanted to keep away. Things like this from America and President Trump did that
