Challenges of Indian Identity | Bisalila Lydia Seren | TEDxKodaikanal International School Youth – Video

In her TEDx talk titled “The Problem with Indian Identity,” Bisalila Lydia Seren sheds light on the complex and often overlooked identity of northeastern Indians. Growing up with aspirations of becoming an IPS officer, Seren reflects on her experience with societal expectations that dictated success through narrow definitions of excellence. A pivotal moment occurred when she witnessed a young girl from Arunachal Pradesh being asked why northeasterners love K-pop during an interview designed to assess their capabilities. This seemingly innocuous question reflects deeper issues of representation and identity.

Seren argues that regions like the northeast are persistently marginalized in Indian media and culture, overshadowed by the dominant narrative of Bollywood. She critiques how festivals like the Hornbill Festival, while celebrated, often reduce rich cultural identities to exoticism, stripping away the genuine history and challenges faced by the people. With insights on the systemic biases in media representation and the societal implications of ignorance, Seren advocates for a broader, more inclusive understanding of Indian identity that acknowledges diversity rather than homogenizing it. Her poignant exploration calls for a reevaluation of how India’s multifaceted identities are perceived and portrayed.

My talk explores how the idea of a singular Indian identity often overlooks the country’s vast diversity, leaving communities like the Nagas feeling alienated within their own nation. By examining this tension, I highlight how forcing sameness harms both the marginalized and the mainstream, and why embracing multiple, coexisting identities is key to a more inclusive India. Bisalila Lydia Seren is a 17-year-old student and senior at Kodaikanal International School. She serves as the Secretary of the KIS Student Council, is a Co-Founder of the Debate Club, and a member of the National Honor Society (NHS). Alongside her leadership roles, she enjoys writing and painting, which reflect her creativity and passion for self-expression.
