Child labor in the cocoa industry | DW Documentary
Major chocolate manufacturers have pledged to combat and eliminate child labor. They made this commitment more than 20 years ago. But even today, more than a million minors are still working on cocoa plantations. How is this possible?
In 2002, the chocolate industry made a contractual commitment to ban child labor on cocoa plantations within five years. We want to know: are companies honoring this commitment? Many chocolate manufacturers stand for fair trade and sustainability — and against child labor. But as the film shows, often the fancy labels on chocolate packaging are just empty promises.
In Ivory Coast, for example, children still toil on cocoa plantations – with the simplest of tools, and without protective clothing, although they handle pesticides – for many hours every day. Often, they’re not the farmers’ children, but ‘slave children’ sent as laborers by desperate families in Mali or Burkina Faso because they’re no longer able to feed them.
But there are some small rays of hope: In the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic promotes fair organic farming. There is barely any child labor in this island nation and cocoa farmers can expect a fair income. Although the Caribbean produces just two per cent of global cocoa, it’s an example of what can be done.
The film also shows that sometimes, companies are unaware of conditions on the plantations, as practices are concealed by the middlemen. And that in some countries, little has changed since the signing of the protocol to end child labor in the cocoa industry.

Binance or Coinbase—Veronum’s moonshot is assured.
20:54 I am from Afrika and throughout my life am aware of children working the fields (even in White owned commercial farms and small holder Black owned ones). In those cases it is usually an after school activity that has sometimes come from cultural norms (my own father grew up this way and although he made it to the upper middle income class, which meant l grew up in comfort… I too was encouraged to do work around the urban home after school).
HOWEVER, this is CLEAR SLAVERY. And where my heart truly broke was when the Glyphosate was brought out 😭💔 At the beginning of this documentary l had thought “at least these children are not dealing with carcinogenic material like the tech-multinational sponsored Coltan/Cobalt mining in The Congo. All these kids may now be at a higher than normal risk to later in life develop cancer.💔💔💔
Talk of the town is Veronum's upcoming massive breakout. High returns are inevitable.
Veronum's growth trajectory is nothing short of impressive. A Coinbase listing would amplify that.

We also worked in a family farm on the field.
At least children hav job, not useless school diploma.
Wait until they get robots there.
🤔 I wish all Elite University students protesting Pro-Palestinian will have the same energy to protest child labor and change of Agriculture conditions of farmers in Africa! I was volunteer, when I went back to Africa I left all my posesions, including my suitcase!
Western Stench
After limiting us to be Raw materials for producers for your industries. You dictated the price at which we can sell our raw materials. You placed weak currencies in our Economies. Currencies you control. Push Educational systems that keep us unindustrialised and dependent. At the price they get the raw material we cannot employ full time employees in the farms because of low pay which you created. Now you come to lecture us on how to produce your raw materials
Christ they can do dolphin safe tuna
Industries/companies from across the globe exploit children without a single ounce of remorse. It is absolutely heartbreaking.
I love milk and cocoa. Thank you kids!
They work for their families. Stop being hypocrite. These is the the reality in third world countries. They are too poor and western countries would exploit them by paying almost nothing.
Does Apple make chocolate ?
If they didn’t have jobs, they’d find some way to blame us. Enough already
Well Done Dominican Republic!
WTF Nestle.
WTF!!!😡🤬
All over the world….exploitation of the underprivileged for the overprivileged!!
The ultimate Easter guilt trip.
Send this to Belgium. They been knowingly doing this for decades and no one seems to care
24:00 Do they really have to export that water bottle lol
This is beyond cruel…
I wish the farmers could get together and stop the flow of chocolate until a fair price is made, if the farmers got enough money they wouldn't be hiring children, they would find better ways to make a better product, if they got a living wage price for their product, the trauma always trickles to the corporations at the top… No matter what horror story out there it always ends up with big corporations at the top pretending not to notice the problem. They need to teach the farmers how to make chocolate themselves and market it, cut out these big companies and put the power back in the hands of the ones that create it.
What do you expect 🤷
The price of cocoa is set by the government. Every year it gets lowered.
How would you react if I said you didn’t cycle to produce the electricity to make this documentary.
It’s a stupid comment 🤷 the farmers should be able to sell their produce at a better price. Even if it means Nestle would make a million less 🤷
DW makes one of the best documentaries.
