In the city of Nara, Japan, an unusual sight can be seen on the streets every day. Sika deer, usually found in the wild, roam freely alongside the residents of the town, making for a truly unique and harmonious relationship between humans and wildlife.
In a video titled “City Where People Live Alongside Deer | Asia | BBC Earth,” viewers are transported to this extraordinary city where deer are not only tolerated but embraced as part of the community. The footage showcases these elegant creatures wandering through the bustling streets, mingling with locals, and even bowing to visitors in exchange for treats.
This enchanting connection between man and nature is a testament to the respect and coexistence that can exist between different species. The residents of Nara have learned to live in harmony with the deer, respecting their space and admiring their beauty as they go about their daily lives.
The video is taken from the larger series “Asia” (2024), which explores the diverse landscapes and wildlife of Earth’s biggest continent. From deserts and jungles to polar wilderness and tropical seas, Asia is a place of incredible variety and wonder. The series highlights the surprising range of animals that thrive in urban environments, including rare species of bears, rhinos, and big cats.
Watching the deer roam freely through the streets of Nara is a reminder of the beauty and magic of the natural world, and serves as a heartwarming example of how humans and animals can peacefully coexist in a shared environment. It is a story of mutual respect, admiration, and the power of connection between all living beings.

this is wild
Fun facts: Every year about 100 deer in Nara Park die in traffic accidents.
❤❤
Live with wild animals = contract wild animal diseases.
duh
It sounds like Westport, CT
I wonder whether the town deer will eventually self-select for burly builds, tough skulls, and smaller antlers.
Something similar has happened with selecting polled (hornless) sheep. They are naturally heavier and stockier, with compact heads.
Reminds me of India where people walk alongside cows.
The Nara deer don’t disappoint. I lived an hour away from Nara in Osaka for about a year. They all make great noises. 😂👌
And life also Happy ….for make Happy also Japan's People 🦌😊

Free food walking around everywhere. I love it. There used to be over 60 million bison roaming The plains of America. A massive renewable food source that was murdered off not only to make the genocide of native Americans more efficient, but you can't sell $10 a pound what fed European beef when there is free food walking around everywhere. I love being human, we have become a scourge in a paradise we do not deserve. 🫤
Wow. Incredible and sight-seeing at the moment. Humans and deer can live together. This is very rare in this world, but any country in the city has deer to live there. If in my country it would not be alive because people would start taking it for food. But this country is really admirable. But only life with nature where animals and humans can live together. Lovely.

I have been to Nara many times and always enjoy walking around with and feeding the deer. I love that they are everywhere you go but are mainly centered in the temple area where there are plenty of tourists.
However, there is one thing that is not mentioned in the video and that is the deer’s teeth have been filed down to prevent severe bites to human beings. (I’ve been bitten twice on two different visits 😂and I can tell you that it’s painful but will not send you to the hospital.)
It’s always a wonderful experience to visit Nara and interact with these mostly gentle animals. ❤🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵❤️
EPIC
The entire rockland county is deer and humans living together lol
