Residents in British Columbia are expressing their concerns about the increasing number of short-term rental properties in quiet neighborhoods, which are beginning to resemble hotels. Darla McGuirk, a resident in the area, is one of many who have raised alarm about the negative impacts these rental properties are having on their communities.
McGuirk and others are worried about the disruption to the peace and quiet of their neighborhoods, as well as the potential safety risks posed by the constant turnover of unfamiliar guests. Many residents feel that these short-term rentals are fundamentally changing the character of their communities and are calling for stricter regulations to address the issue.
In addition to noise complaints and safety concerns, residents are also troubled by the impact these rentals are having on the availability of housing in the area. With more properties being used as short-term rentals, the supply of long-term rental units is dwindling, leading to increased competition and rising prices for those in need of permanent housing.
The issue of short-term rentals acting like hotels in quiet neighborhoods has become a contentious topic in British Columbia, as residents and local officials grapple with finding a balance between the economic benefits of tourism and the preservation of community values. As the debate rages on, it is clear that residents are determined to protect the character and integrity of their neighborhoods from the encroachment of commercial short-term rental properties.

Owners of these short-term rental homes are mostly Chinese living outside Canada 🇨🇦.
They bought these properties when their children came to Canada "to study" using their corrupt money.
Keep calling police if they are partying too loud or any annoying activities …
Homeowners are such complainers, let people make money. I don’t see anybody making a fuss about constant construction noise happening at every other city block for useless bike lanes.
You could always move !
Ban Airbnb.
It shouldn’t even be legal to profit from residential property. It’s a home, or a business, pick one.
One issue is some of the politicians are also short term property owners. I can recall a similar vote for restrictions where Bonnie Crombie of Ontario argued at council it wouldn't be fair to over regulate as she had a nice property overseas.
You all wanted inflated property values, you didnt want working class families as neighbours 🤡
Canadians love more and more rules.
nimby karens cause most of societies worst problems
Canada 2025🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😂😂
Well call the cops or if you want go knock on the door and tell them to keep the noise down and threaten to call the cops do that. Neighborhoods have noise restrictions don't they?
All i seen there was i am privileged and bored and i have to listen to people have fun and enjoy themselves and we aren't standing for it . Kelowna is a tourist town last i checked and also a vacation destination , move to Cranbrook or smithers then if you want quiet .
Oh look these companies are playing Canadian's like fools….. destroying our housing market while cashing in doing so…
SOoooooo great Liberals & Conservatives alike have stood around for 10+yrs with their fingers in their noses.
No air BNB or short term rentals in areas zoned residentially. Simple..

If you want to run a hotel go buy a hotel.
Just ban Airbnb altogether. This is absolutely out of control
