Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, a very controversial figure in Turkish politics, has passed away at the age of 83 in exile in the United States. Gulen, who had been accused by the Turkish government of orchestrating a failed coup in 2016, had been living in the US since 1999.
Gulen was once a close ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but their relationship soured over time, leading to them becoming bitter enemies. Gulen’s movement, known as the Hizmet (Service) movement, has a large following in Turkey and around the world, but has been labeled as a terrorist organization by the Turkish government.
To delve deeper into the life and legacy of Fethullah Gulen, FRANCE 24’s François Picard spoke to Political Scientist Gökhan Bacik. Gulen’s death marks the end of a chapter in Turkish politics, but his influence and legacy will continue to be felt for years to come.
