The Criminal Code, directed by Howard Hawks, is a riveting tale of redemption and moral dilemmas. The film follows the journey of young Robert Graham, played with magnetic intensity by Phillips Holmes, who is sentenced to ten years in prison after a tragic incident fueled by alcohol. Walter Huston delivers a powerful performance as Mark Brady, an ambitious prosecutor turned prison warden who offers Robert a chance at redemption by hiring him as his personal chauffeur.
As Robert begins to show signs of reform and a pardon on the horizon, his past comes back to haunt him when his volatile cellmate drags him back into a world of chaos. The film explores themes of second chances, choices, and the consequences of past mistakes as Robert is faced with a moral crossroads. Will he stay on the path to redemption or will he be dragged back into the darkness he has worked so hard to escape?
The Criminal Code is a gripping and thought-provoking film that delves into the complexities of human nature and the eternal struggle between good and evil. With stellar performances from the cast and expert direction from Howard Hawks, this film is a must-watch for cinephiles looking for a compelling and engaging story.

36:27Dr. Rinewulf is played by John St. Polis, who also played Carl Roemer in "Mr. Wong, Detective" starring Boris Karloff. (1938)
Walter Huston has a lot of range: loved his work in Treasure of Sierra Madre
A very very good film , Period !
interesting …..i read a autobiogràhy of a ex'con who masterminded a rash of credit card scams after acquiring a card making machine that was stolen. The feds finally caught him and this tough guy took the fall without making any deals. He got 11 yrs and like the movie about 6 yrs in he started having bad dreams and psychotic breaks. He was broken by the system unable to get his former strength back. Thats the year that he wasnt prepared for no. 6
NOT NEARLY AS GOOD AS THE REMAKE!! I'm not sure of the year, but this was remade as a movie titled "Convicted," starring a slim Broderick Crawford as the Warden & Glenn Ford as the prisoner. Identical plot, nearly identical script, but the 2nd was MUCH better in every way!!
Walter looked so much better than his son John.
The secret to enjoying this movie is to count the number of times the word "Yeah" is mentioned.
1:35:18 brillent movie

This movie was remade under the title Convicted 1950 starring Glenn Ford and Broderick Crawford.

Good movie, but 97 ads are too much for me.
Waiting for Bud Jameson or Vernon Dent to make an appearance as a guard.
Why didn't he hire the services of Dewey, Cheetum and Howe's finest attorney, I Fleeceum ?????
Where are Howard Fine and Howard ?
Awesome movie ❤!
This film was the first really important part in the career of Boris Karloff. He received the best notices from the critics and was the actual highlight of this movie. Another film also in 1931 where Karloff stood out, was Five Star Final , a best picture nomination. Of course, Karloff finished the year in his iconic role as the Frankenstein monster.
I'm looking at it now??
Good story, thank you.
