Crisis in Venezuela – Maduro's ongoing power struggle | DW Documentary
Nicolás Maduro has been president of Venezuela since 2013. He rules the country, which faces grave political and economic problems, with an iron fist. Despite massive criticism from home and abroad, Maduro is clinging to power. Successfully, so far.
Venezuela experienced many dramatic events in recent decades. There was the “Bolivarian Revolution” started by Hugo Chávez, who was elected president in 1998 and introduced a socialist system to the country. There were also attempted coups, violent protests, and severe economic crises — despite the fact that Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world.
After the illness and death of Hugo Chávez in 2013, Nicolás Maduro succeeded as president. The former bus driver and socialist set himself the goal of continuing Venezuela’s socialist revolution, at any cost.
His rule has been authoritarian. Corruption within Venezuela’s state elite and mismanagement are widespread. Years of poor economic decisions have driven the country to ruin under Maduro’s presidency. Millions of people in Venezuela are impoverished, and many have fled to neighboring countries.
Yet despite opposition attempts to force him out, Maduro has survived. He was declared the winner in Venezuela’s 2024 presidential elections in July – this, although the parliament had tried to remove him from office in 2017 already. People took to the streets to demand his resignation back then and this year again.
However, none of this seems to have affected Maduro – and following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the resulting rift between Russia and North America and Europe, the international geopolitical situation has changed. The world is more desperate for oil than ever; and a vast quantity of oil is lying dormant underground in Venezuela.

Although Maduro is vile dictator who borough unimaginable suffering to his own people at least his regime is not imperialist unlike his colleagues in Russia and Iran.
He's Survived because no one has Really Tried to get rid of Him.
42min? No chance.
It is always hard to watch documentaries on Latin America because of how it often gets painted as a binary where you either support the current or past system when it isn't that simple. It isn't complicated that if things in Venezuela were great prior to the 'Revolution' then Chavez wouldn't have been able to gain the support of the people and call himself a 'revolutionary'. I don't support the current or the past state since both systems rely on authoritarian superpowers.
Why are they interviewing so many people from the US? Don't they have enough analysts from Venezuela (or, at least, from Latin America)? Analysts from the US are either ignorant about other countries, or they will say whatever is more convenient to their own country 🤨
Do documentaries on children dying in Gaza
Terrible how this document was made interviewing the biggest thief of PDVSA and not asking where is the money he stole, trying to wash his face. Terrible. This documentary is trash
Socialism worked very well in Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, the USSR, Argentina and all the countries that joined it. The result is always the same. EVERYONE EQUAL IN POVERTY. Maduro Regime will fall if the people are willing to bear arms. Also LULA should have never been released from prison. He is responsible for the Maduro regime to stay in power today.
Nice desperate American and German propaganda. I guess the German recession is hitting hard and they need the cheap oil
Germans think that all Latinos or Hispanic countries are the same. 😂 is ok to me Germans and Austrians are the same also.
I am 100% against Maduro, I think he is wrong and has dealt too much damage to that beautiful nation. But this story and analysis only brings in the hate and conniving Miami Machine “exodus” run by racist Cuban republicans seeking to force American men to fight abroad in Venezuela and Cuba to “liberate” these countries so they can be the first ones to profit from said industries.
John bolton reminds me of Ned Flanders from the Simpsons.
Why there are always USA backed or USA returned people tried to capture power?
Just such a shame
este documental parece una apologia a Chavez, las cosas no son asi, la educación publica esta desde los tiempos de Guzman Blanco. And on top of everything the intro music is mexican! nada que ver con Venezuela. I'm sorry DW but you should have found better people to interview than Ramirez
People dont get it. MADURO is simple a puppet of the CASTROS, a shield for the Castros. If the Castros dont care at all about their citizens they care less about the people of venezuela. Maduro and Venezuela serves as a shield for the Castro regime. If attention is focus on venezuela nobody is thinking about the miserable criminality that the Castros have impose in Cuba. Madure was formed and molded in Cuba, Brain Washed in order to "protect" the Castro regime.
He literally stole the election and the world said …whatever
He follow the Stalin playbook.
Clearly Venezuelas neighbors don't care, especially Brazil. So there's nothing to be done for now. When Maduro sends troops into Guyana, it will be a problem. Maduro is a losing bet. Too bad Lula has his head in the sand.
At last Venezuela need Maduro. And he is most popular. viva Maduro
Don't let DW a German propaganda channel mislead you or undermines Nicolás Maduro, a pivotal figure in Venezuela's fight for true sovereignty against Western hegemony.
the people you have interviewed in this doc have no credibility in reality, they are stooges or imperialists
Very interesting, informative and well put together. Bravo DW.
I love how the media correctly pointed out the inequality in wealth that preceded Hugo Chavez revolution. During this period, there were a lot of western oil giants operating but non of their leaders frowned against the massive corruption going on. Now, Maduro is not within their sphere of influence, he has become the evil that happened to humanity. A nationalist.
The world is evolving. Everyone has been armed with the western especially the united states ancient tactics of overthrowing a government. ‘Give a dog a bad name in order eliminated it’. They did that in recent times in Iraq, Libya they worked Russia stoped them in Syria. They come up with concocted claims about how a leader is oppressing their people, then they steal there national reserve and also sanction the country into pressuring the people to over throw the government. There is no trust in the west, that’s why BRICKS is the answer. The world is multipolar.
I asked ChatGPT:
"So, US's interventionism in Venezuela's elections is illegal, but the US argues "pro-democracy-policies" to justify their illegal involvement?"

Yes, that's a fair summary of the situation. U.S. interventionism in Venezuela can be considered illegal under international law due to violations of the principle of non-intervention and sovereignty. However, the U.S. justifies its actions by framing them as part of a broader strategy to promote democracy and protect human rights.
Here’s a breakdown:
1. International Law Violations:
Non-Intervention and Sovereignty: According to international law, particularly the U.N. Charter, countries must respect the sovereignty of other states and refrain from intervening in their internal political matters. This includes activities such as backing opposition leaders, applying sanctions aimed at regime change, or influencing electoral processes.
The U.S.’s economic sanctions, support for Juan Guaidó, and efforts to delegitimize Nicolás Maduro’s government are widely seen as interference in Venezuela's internal affairs. Such actions violate the principle that Venezuelans, not foreign powers, should determine their leadership through domestic political processes.
2. U.S. Justifications:
Pro-Democracy Argument: The U.S. justifies its involvement by claiming that Nicolás Maduro’s government is illegitimate, citing electoral fraud, authoritarianism, and human rights abuses. From this perspective, supporting opposition leader Juan Guaidó and applying pressure on Maduro's regime are viewed as efforts to restore democracy and free elections in Venezuela.
Humanitarian Concerns: The U.S. also frames its actions as a response to Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis, which it attributes to Maduro’s mismanagement. By promoting political change, the U.S. argues it is seeking to improve the conditions of the Venezuelan people.
3. Criticism of U.S. Actions:
Double Standards: Critics argue that the U.S. selectively applies its “pro-democracy” policies. Historically, the U.S. has supported authoritarian regimes when it suited its interests, particularly in Latin America. Many view its focus on Venezuela as driven by geopolitical interests (e.g., control over oil) rather than genuine concern for democracy or human rights.
Regime Change Tactics: U.S. actions are often seen as part of a broader pattern of regime change interventions in Latin America, which have included coups, support for military dictatorships, and economic coercion. In this view, the promotion of democracy is a cover for maintaining U.S. dominance in the region.
4. Global Reactions:
While the U.S. has the support of some Western countries, many nations, including Russia, China, and Cuba, argue that U.S. actions in Venezuela are illegal and destabilizing. They see U.S. policies as violating Venezuela’s right to self-determination and part of a long history of U.S. interventionism in the region.
Conclusion:
Yes, many consider U.S. interventionism in Venezuela to be illegal, violating international law regarding sovereignty and non-intervention. The U.S. justifies its involvement by framing it as pro-democracy and pro-human rights, but this argument is seen by many as a pretext for advancing geopolitical interests, particularly given its history of interventionism in Latin America."
It seems DW is fine with any illegal politics, as long as it fits into the US interests.
This is like a vision what is coming to KENYA.. May God help us
Another CIA job to fail a country to steal its Oil! Germany! lol Genocide supporter.
same thing com
ing soon in kenya
The US will organize "Regime Changes" for countries not following the " International Rules Based Order " !
So the idea of international sanctions are so stupid. They have the disproprotionate effect of hurting the people not the government. On the contrary the government becomes more violent to repress the starving people that still find some energy to fight back.
