The video “Sailing When We Never Thought We Could” follows Jason and Nikki Wynn on their 469-mile passage across the Sulu Sea, where they face unexpected challenges due to the lack of wind. Despite the borderline doldrum conditions and never above 10 knots of wind, they manage to keep a decent pace on their catamaran, CURIOSITY. This allows them to navigate the passage with compromised engines, making the journey less stressful.
The Wynns share their experience of using every sail they have, sometimes all in one day, to keep moving forward in light wind conditions. They discuss the performance of their sails and setup, comparing it to their old boat and sharing what they feel they are missing. For those curious about sail plans and sailing in challenging conditions, this video provides a deep dive into CURIOSITY’s setup.
Jason and Nikki Wynns are modern-day explorers and documentarians who have been traveling the world since 2011 in search of adventure and self-discovery. They live off-grid on their sailboat, prioritizing self-reliance and sustainable living. Their curiosity leads them to meet strangers, embrace alternative lifestyles, and challenge conventional ideas of home and community.
Through their videos, the Wynns inspire others to #CultivateCuriosity and explore the world with open minds and open hearts. Whether they are sailing across oceans or connecting with strangers, their mission remains the same: to embrace the unknown and learn from every experience.
If you’re curious about life on the sea, alternative living, or the thrill of sailing in challenging conditions, “Sailing When We Never Thought We Could” offers a glimpse into the Wynns’ adventurous lifestyle and their passion for exploring the unknown.

Love the zebra sail. Looks sharp. 👍
Another fabulous video on a beautiful, tropical, open ocean. I believe the Philippines are tropical. It is surprising being in the tropics with minimal wind. They may have Tropicana OJ there. 🌴 👍
Still happy with the HH Cat upon reflection? Thanks for the vids
Pricing information when talking about all these amazing tech solutions such as robot made carbon sails seems to be missing. Just dropped into these videos but is this a no no for some reason on this site?
Another really creative video. Great job of weaving sails into the daily vlog. Thank you! 😊😊
I dont even wana know what all these sails alone cost lol. Nice sails specially the lightweight ones.
you guys have almost compleatly stopped the under water videos, love the under water stuff and seams there is like 2 minutes in last five videos.. Hope you get back to the reef, fish and underwater magic.
So those FADs' didn't turn out to be just a fad 🙂 Might need to change the channel name to Gone with the light Wynns. Man, I crack myself up lol.
What a lovely informative, well presented video. Stay Safe & Fair Winds!! ☘
Beautiful boat / home – everything new and educational regards the sails thanks.
Hey guys, thanks for helping out Sail Life.
Thank you. Lovely episode.
A detailed video on your reefing setup would be cool . Not alot on the karver hooks and 2 to 1 down haul on the tack
Thanks a lot that you helped Mads with his problems with Google!!!
Great intro! All about the sailing right down to the sails – awsome!
Your fancy “high seed”float home is so high tech. Hope the factory support is there for you when stuff breaks. Glad to see you missed the realy bad weather.
Time to install FLIR
danasan eco adventure park and oslob wale sharks diving, all in cebu
A groovy and informative episode.
Nice Edit guys. We are headed down the east coast of Borneo in the rally with a full military protection as in the south western part of Philippines there are some nasty groups kidnapping people etc for ransom. They come across in small boats from the Philippines to Sabah Malaysia to do this. Since 2017 the have been 40 abductions in this region. So be careful and do a little research on this area. On the sails, laminated carbon sails are so good for racing but sadly they have a limited lifespan. In a full time cruising environment you will be lucky to get 5 years out of them. Most times 3-4 years. For cruising and longevity Dyneema sails under the trade name Hydranet are 20 years sails. Our Main and Genoa are 2010 sails and still going strong. We currently have a windlass motor problem so we are leaving in the morning for Kudat in the northern tip of Borneo to get a new motor shipped in there 🙄
Night Vision Monocular – Have you considered having one? They are very affordable now, a good Bushnell is less than $300us. Great for when you pull into an anchorage at night… A Thermal Monocular would be great in fog and other times, also in the $300us price range. Both would be nice to have when looking out for pirates. 🎉
Time for a haircut champ, Nikki always looks amazing, you on the other hand are looking like a homeless bum 😂
Great video. Yes, it's a very interesting topic – are sails and performance hulls.
Your guest passenger always adds a great wit.
Why is the motor running hot?
Is it a problem the motor (I recall yes, and this is the maintenance reason why you are hauling out) or …
2) are you taking on too much load when one diesel motor is powering itself and another electric motor (plus hotel load).
Terrific lighting on this boat; looks super cool and comfortable.
I'll add that this hull looks too narrow on passage in seas. The side to side roll can be a lot probably due to performance hull, narrow stance, and big sails. I would also have designed taller gunnels to keep the boat taller with less slapping and less salt spray. Tall hulls keep the boat above the waves and offer the option of a solid front deck and easier salt water cleanup.
Hi guys, you have solar and batteries? Why not use the AC?
Great informative video, sails of the future indeed. Now you just need to send Jason into the shop for warranty work ☺️.
Need to check for Glocoma if there's a history, I didn't and my optic nerve is 60% effective.
Your perseverance and courage are truly inspiring; you ventured into sailing even when it seemed impossible. Your determination and spirit show that with heart and effort, anything can be achieved. And I am Floating Village Life.
13:29 I'm always triggered by crappy knife skills mostly because it is not safe but I might as well give credit where credit is due. Nicky, perfect knife handling, pinching the blade, curling your fingers in on the other hand. Take note people it's not hard 😛
Talk about strange… Every time I watch a documentary or a movie, or read any form literature pertaining to WHATEVER,,, within 24 hours someone refers to said mental intake by quote…
Yesterday I watched a documentary on the bloopers of Forest Gump…
Naturally, Life is like a box of chocolates was played a few times…
Hence the start of this episode…
Who’d a thunk it… Sailors like chocolates too 🤭…
The Aviator!! GREAT MOVIE and great acting by Leo DeCaprio… 'The way of the future…the way of the future…" 🙂
What is the bed (mattress ) size ?
It's been said that power boating is about getting somewhere and sailing is about going somewhere. It's the difference between destination and journey. We sailors love a journey. Yes, we love it when we can make good time and go where we want to go; yet going too fast is a real problem. Go too fast and the adventure fades. Go too fast, and nowhere is far away.
Jordin Kare had a beautiful song about that ("Wanderer"). Here's the bridge:
"For with steel and steam and gasoline and turbines' whining scream
they have trapped me in a nightmare that is someone else's dream
of a world so small and guarded you could hold it in your hand
a world that knows no land called Far Away."
