Displaced Palestinians return to north Gaza after hostage deal

After a hostage deal led by Israel, tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians are finally able to return to north Gaza through the Netzarim Corridor. The opening of routes allowed for mass movements of people walking along the coastal route, while those traveling by car are facing lengthy waits at checkpoints.

The return of the Palestinians was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was delayed due to a dispute over an Israeli hostage, Arbel Yehud. President Trump made controversial suggestions of relocating Palestinians to Jordan and Egypt in a “clean out” of Gaza, a proposal quickly rejected by the countries in question as well as others in the region.

The situation in Gaza continues to be a complex and volatile one, with ongoing tensions between Israel and the Palestinian population. The return of displaced Palestinians to north Gaza marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, but many challenges and obstacles still remain in achieving a lasting peace in the region.
