Durban – Survival in South Africa’s dangerous metropolis | DW Documentary
Nazreen Ally has had an eventful life. Abandoned by her mother, she grew up with her foster father on the outskirts of Durban. At 13, she was raped. But she never wanted to be seen as a victim.
Nazreen Ally talks openly and frankly about her traumatic experience, when a man raped her at gunpoint. She was 13 years old at the time. Today, in her mid-40s, she comes across as composed, with a highly structured approach to life.
Nazreen Ally made a career as a bodybuilder before founding her own security company. Night after night, she is out on the streets of the South African metropolis of Durban, stepping in where the police are absent. In her private time, Nazreen Ally likes to withdraw into the comfort of her faith. A Muslim, she finds composure in the peace and quiet of regular prayer.
In an interview with journalist Ninka Mbaye, this remarkable woman talks about what she longs for in life, what is important to her and how she deals with the constant danger that surrounds her.

it's a case of 'hard livings' on both sides ; Nazreen's experiences growing up and the state of our beloved South Africa. Strength to you Dearest Sister. I hope that the G.N.U can make S.A. a better place for all 🙏. From Phoenix, Durban.
Truly inspiring….God bless
What a beautiful, strong and courageous woman that many men would never excel to. her level and successful position especially after she has been through so many traumatic events in her life.I applaud her
NOTHING new to see, it’s South Africa after all.
That pat on the chest from her….!
They will never get rid off crime as long as they keep scapegoating😮
Iran gonna call soldiers from thekwini
No,its a trust thing! We dont trust our cops! Its so bad that sometimes people don't even report the crime
There’s something in our city of Durban called “Township Justice”
You should do a documentary on that. Cops are useless.
Naz and every other small security compamy owner are only in it for one thing. Money. Dont fall for this rubbish. Profit is the only goal. See how much they charge for their services vs what they pay their employees.
I have major respect for this women! From another South African women to another
I hate all these documentaries that always portray our country in a negative light, always focusing on the negatives. WHy do we allow foreigners to use us tot depict our country negatively? Sure there is crime in SA, but how about focusing on contributing factors like colonialism, poverty, inequality, etc????
Homegirl 🎉 Nazreen Ally.
Really good coverage, Job well done!!
Mmmmm…. Corruption and illegal activities and crime rates must be warned ⚠️ 🤣 😆 😂….
Because there some good laws and regulation will be provided for the government's from now.. 😊😊😊😊 because globally people against this things so all the governmental pupils are processing the some badics facts…
She's not patrolling alone, she should try patrolling alone.
It's no surprise that India's would trust an Indian to protect them.
Super wonderful documentary about private security company. A brave woman working as a field agent,in a place enormous trouble makers and criminals mobility notable …
Those are very dangerous areas in Durban. Every city has these areas.
Durban like most city’s is a bipolar city, the rich are super rich and the poor super poor, I haven’t seen it as bad anywhere else in SA maybe joburg. It’s a shame government hasn’t been able to uplift the poor fast enough socialism is a joke
Im South African and i live in Durban, this video is 100% accurate to how dangerous my country is, especially for a female, we’re in a living nightmare, no one and no where is safe, black or white, you’re on your own, the police cant protect you because they cant even protect themselves and majority of the time, they are also criminals, our houses look like prisons, fencing, alarms systems, cameras, multiple gates and burglar Guards, this country has gone to hell since 1994, There is no rainbow nation, this is the country of the devil himself, and its all thanks to our post 1994 government that has caused this 💔 you’re risking your life by just leaving your house to get food, no matter what you do and where you are in South Africa, your life is in danger of being taken away, If you think I’m over exaggerating, you’re either not South African or you’ve never been to South Africa before, i hope things get better especially after the recent elections, otherwise my husband and i are leaving, I’m not having my future children grow up in this hell, please pray for our country 🇿🇦
