Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has been making headlines recently for his controversial comments and actions targeting European leaders. Musk’s incendiary interventions have caused a stir among governments in Europe, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer among those feeling the heat.
Chancellor Scholz has taken a “cool” approach to Musk’s critical personal comments but expressed concern over the billionaire’s involvement in Germany’s election by endorsing the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Similarly, Prime Minister Starmer condemned the “lies and misinformation” spread by Musk that are undermining democracy in the UK.
Musk’s recent social media posts about a child sexual abuse case in northern England have further fueled controversy. He called for a new public inquiry into the cases and criticized Starmer for allegedly failing to bring perpetrators to justice during his tenure as England’s director of public prosecutions. Starmer defended his record, stating that he had taken steps to address child sexual exploitation.
Additionally, Musk has advocated for the release of far-right activist Tommy Robinson, currently serving a prison sentence for contempt of court. Starmer criticized Musk’s support for Robinson, highlighting the dangerous influence of figures like Robinson in promoting street violence.
French President Emmanuel Macron has framed Musk’s influence as a challenge to Europe’s democratic values, emphasizing the need for unity and resilience against external disruptions. Macron warned of the risks posed by tech billionaires like Musk intervening in elections and destabilizing democratic institutions.
Overall, Musk’s involvement in European politics has raised concerns among leaders who see his actions as a threat to democracy and societal harmony. The growing influence of tech billionaires like Musk in political matters has sparked debates about the limits of free speech and the potential impact on democratic processes in Europe.

Video “Elon Musk goes after European leaders: Will they push back? | DW News Desk” was uploaded on 01/09/2025 to Youtube Channel DW News
The best thing for all leaders to do is not to take the bate. This is a game to musk and others. People that use power to manipulate and degrade others never win in the end.
I think it is personal to Musk: he is going after all the people who support woke ideas. He has had a very personal problem from woke laws.
12:00 two people talking and giving interviews is controversial and illigal 🤡🤡🤣🤣
Amazing is the fact that journalists feel surprised at someone expressing their opinion!!!! Come on, guys, Elon Musk and anyone else in the world can express their opinion on ANYONE!!!!!! This astonishment only shows that you have got used to not speaking!!!!!
Ironically, everyone is openly attacking Elon for openly attacking politicians. I find it insanely curious and somewhat entertaining. Almost if no one truly understands free speech in Europe. 🤷♂️
DW regularly publishes critical news stories on foreign leaders, were they also interference?
When the trade war starts, I'm hoping for 100 percent tariffs on Teslas.
You had better be very careful because DW would be off the air and off the web if it was held to the standard generally agreed to by this panel. Obviously.
Stop whining it’s just a payback German politicians done it for other countries. I am from Georgia and German politicians interfere with our election. so you can do it and others can’t?
How is supporting a party butting in? He’s just speaking. He’s not voting. It will be the German people that do it so listen to them.
The first amendment demands brutal speech. It’s the American way
DW uses the term Far Right repeatedly. In the USA, this means anyone from the middle to the right. Are you using the same editorial misdirection? Who is the German Right? Or, as in America, you cannot say Right without Far?
You guys are always trying to shut down speech. Works great for you guys in the legacy media. But we are the media now. Community Notes Fact track him too. Sounds like the German wants to set up a Ministry of truth – with him as the czar.
I love how the left is center left and the right is far right. This channel is so far left I can’t see it. This is the last gasp of life for the left. Absolutely nonsense
Misinformation and disinformation is dead. That died with Covid. Now it’s just information and people can make up their own minds. You can’t control us anymore. It’s over, you have not received the memo?
EINE STARKE PRÄSIDENTIN 💙👍 X DR. ALICE WEIDEL 💙 FÜR DEUTSCHLAND
EINE STARKE PRÄSIDENTIN 💙👍 X DR. ALICE WEIDEL 💙 FÜR DEUTSCHLAND
A platform that is no longer not only doing enough to label lies (and the "community notes" model is already way to weak, there is no place for clear factual incorrect statements, that in volume cannot be by honest mistake, but are … lies), but massively interferes with disinformation campaigns need to go away. It is probably difficult if not impossible short term, which leads to the question if it will be to late after having taken years to adjust law, but it needs to happen. Liberal democracy does not work with any kind of media, but needs "free" media — which does not mean unregulated, but free from undue influence (an billionaire owner with an extreme aganda [who is also to lazy to read up before starting a campaign] is hard to top as a danger). The correct way would probably by making the lies cost — as it did happen for lying tabloid journalism when they thought there were no rules as they claimed journalism.
Making an appeal to schools teaching more competencies is naive at best. Some of the disinformation campaigns are run by top marketing organizations, some by intelligence services. There is no way people just are smarter. If we were marketing would not run sex sells but technical data tables/ test results on TV. If we want to keep liberal democracy we need to put down the major disinformation platforms.
Thanks, Elon, for supporting normal people in European Countries. Just like to mention the focus on Grooming-cases in UK
As like his father said : get lost
In the final comments, one presenter mentioned policing the ‘tone’ of a comment. How is that fact checking?
If you don’t want Americans sharing their opinions about European politics then you probably should stay out of American politics, which you most certainly didn’t during the 2024 election; remember? When you were calling Trump all sorts of insults.
Oh no democracy!
why do you refer to anyone not aligned with your social/political sensibilities as 'FAR RIGHT' ? The same behavior also occurs in the UK and here in the USA so it is not exclusive to Germany. Actually it seems to be universal globally. Funny how that works.
Elon Musk is not the threat to the EU… Its the EU itself!
These ppl r trying to say Alice weidel having a conversation with musk on X is potentially illegal!!!! That's crazyyyy
Stop giving him attention
13:45 "And we don't have a precedent for the worlds richest man also being one of the closest confidants of the worlds most powerful man [the US president] and owning one of the biggest media platforms" That's not strictly correct Amien Essif. This isn't unprecedented: it's a historically precedented repeating pattern.
History provides numerous examples of the rich and power owning the largest media "platforms" of their day: the so-called "press barons". Rupert Murdoch is perhaps the most obvious example; Lord Northcliffe another: we might even consider Cicero a "press baron" of his times. Such people have always had either direct power or influence on governments and the individuals in power within those governments.
You might argue Social Media platforms offer greater amplified power, however I'd argue that's not really true or perhaps that we don't really understand fully how they create influence. For example, 1) We don't really understand or can't predict clearly what the algorithm will serve up to any individual, and therefore can't know how many people see let alone are influenced by an given post on a social platform, 2) I'm not actively using Twitter (X) as much as I once did. I don't actively use Facebook, and don't have a TikTok or Insta account. I don't watch TV or listen to talk radio. I use YouTube significantly more than any of the others. So how much influence do Elon Musk's "platforms" have on me directly?
It's fairly easy to argue that in days gone by where there were a limited number of news platforms – news papers, radio or TV stations, that the influence was significantly greater than with the fractured, individualised influence of social media.
Talk about misinformation, disinformation. How about suppression of the truth from governments?
you guys are lefties….and you are putting out disinformation against him.
it’s not about the money for him, it’s about saving the town square , having free speech! And you didn’t EVEN mention why Facebook is not using moderators anymore! It’s because the moderators WERE BIAS!!!!!!!!!! YOU GUYS ARE BIAS!!!!!!!
and he is not anti trans ….he is trying to protect children who should not be making life changing decisions that are permanent. Watch his interview about his trans child, and you will see his heart is in the right place.
So called “free speech” of Elon Musk is only suitable for him himself.
I wonder if all these debates would have taken part if Elon would have posted something like “Olaf is a great guy!”
You are such hypocrites, you mentioned the coup d’etat in Romania where elections were cancelled but not once mentioned the fact that there were no proofs nor there are any after one month since elections were cancelled and the fact that the country is still ruled by an expired and illegitimate president and there is not a date set for presidential elections yet.
If you want to fight misinformation and disinformation you need to start with yourselves otherwise you have no credibility.
Lone Skum
Right or Left , scary part should be that a man because of his wealth has been interfering in so many countries and people are actually getting affected by it . What is the meaning of democracy then ? It’s like going back to stone ages where the mighty powerful can do whatever they want . Some people worship such , but that’s what you are proving in the end that human beings couldn’t live under democracy even for a 100 years , people are already going back to being ruled under Might . What a shame !
Lol keep crying
For some reason, Musk's endorsement for AFD brings some horrific memories alive.
Places like Auschwitz, Birkenau, Sobibor, Majdanek, Plaszow in Poland, Mauthausen and Ebensee in Austria, Dachau, Neuengamme, Sachsenhausen, Esterwegen, Bergen-Belsen, Husum-Schwesigen, Breitenau, Ravensbrueck in Germany.
Everyone of this places has been a slaughterhouse for innocent, tortured people.
I didn't make any comments about Mr. Musk, out of respect for his achievements as a brilliant technical engineer, but his endorsement for a German fascist movement diminishes all his accomplishments, and makes him a very sad & disgraced individual.
I do hope, Germany and Europe will react to Musk's fascist evilness in kind !
musk went for socialistic leaders with a record of calling trump names … conservatives in europe should seek alliance … remember republican reagan "tear down this wall" 1987 in Berlin !!!
Soon people will realize that these two heads will want to play with the world like they play with the moon, I think they have already created their own map of their world. Anyway, when they start, send me greetings and they should send me to Pluto this world is not for weak people
Nonsense. The mainstream media owners have always played a massive role in supporting US poitlics. And other countries as well. What is differnet about Musk is that he isn't reliant on advertising and actually cares about humnairy. Why the liberals don't like Elon is because the youth do. A demographic the mainstream media have never been able to attract. The future is bright now.
