Exclusive Interview: Pete Hoekstra on the Gordie Howe International Bridge Opening
As excitement builds ahead of the anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge on July 27, critical questions linger regarding the financial arrangements between Canada and the United States. In a move that is both strategic and potentially contentious, Canada has fully financed the bridge’s construction, totaling $6.4 billion. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has made it clear that the toll-sharing arrangement with the United States will only commence once the substantial debt is repaid.
In an exclusive interview with Global News, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra addressed these pressing concerns and highlighted the strong collaboration between the two nations. “There’s no distance between the U.S. and Canada on the bridge,” Hoekstra remarked, underscoring the cooperative spirit that has characterized discussions surrounding the project. He emphasized that the Canadian government is on board with the negotiated profit-sharing agreement, marking a significant step toward ensuring mutual benefits from the bridge’s operations.
The Gordie Howe Bridge aims to facilitate trade and travel between the two countries, enhancing connectivity in a region that has long relied on efficient cross-border transportation. As the opening date approaches, stakeholders on both sides of the border are keenly watching how the toll-sharing plan will unfold, especially in light of the hefty financial investments made by Canada.
With the bridge poised to become a vital artery for commerce and tourism, questions about the long-term financial implications continue to resonate. Hoekstra’s reassurance regarding the collaboration between the U.S. and Canada suggests a commitment to navigating these complexities as they arise, promising a brighter economic future for both nations intertwined by this monumental infrastructure project.

He and the entire US regime are crazy. Don't want to hear what he spews, pure crap
Global News SUCKS!
86-47
The bridge is going to come in handy when all those manufacturer's pack up and head south to a friendlier climate (see: KPMG study). Thanks for capitulating Mark.
Why do we give this guy so much air time?
And no one seems to know what this new screaming good deal is. Now why is that? The.original binding contract wasn't complicated.
What a huge waste of good air
He didn't answer because he doesn't know. Such ignorance shouldn't be in public service
It’s not “what we believe we signed” – it’s a legal binding contract. It is written in black and white. This is the problem with America – they do not respect the law. Get Hoekstra OUT OF CANADA!!
canada should never pay for any more bridge or infrestructure with usa they not trustworthy. we spend in canada only we better off never leave anything for usa to steal from us
slime ball
liars, thieves & perverts, that's how i spell that place, how do you spell it???
Why interview him if he refuses to answer a single question? He might as well be talking to Congress. What a slimy greasebag.
so technically we are screwed. he is acusing the liberals of not properly representing facts.
NOBODY CARES ABOUT THAT UGLY BRIDGE
Trump knows
put $0 tolls on the bridge. the usa will get nothing, and trump + friends will suffer since embasidor bridge will loose money
Can't stand the guy
Hello Elbows Up voters. Thank PM Carney for this! The master negotiator😂😂😂
He is so full of 💩
He found out about the bridge opening from the media…🙄oh please
Mexico just said they don't want a bilateral deal with the US without Canada….
As part of the opening ceremony, Mr. Hoekstra could be trundled across the Gordie Howe Bridge in a 360- litre recycling cart.
Then dumped.
It would be vastly entertaining.
Pete Hoekstra might have to thank Canadians he was born, his parents were not killed.
Hoekstra was born in Groningen Netherlands, 1953. Were his parents living in Groningen on 16 April, 1945? If so they were liberated by the Second Canadian Division.
Because the city was sheltering 150,000 Dutch refugees, the Canadians decided against artillery bombardments—even though they knew they would take more casualties. Instead they fought house-to-house, and used tanks effectively. The German defenders had their backs to the wall: Groningen was a shield before a submarine base, and an escape hatch for German armies trying to escape east. The defenders included 8000 German infantry, as well as German SS and Dutch waffen-SS. The SS feared being arrested for war crimes, as they had just murdered 85 American POWs at Malmedy.
43 Canadians died. 100 civilians. 130 Germans. 5100 German Heer and German/Dutch SS, and 100 officers surrendered.
Liberated: 150,000 Netherlanders.
Hoekstra is a POS. If he had been a teen during the war, would he have joined the Dutch resistance? Or the other side with the snazzy Hugo Boss uniform? ? You decide .
Hey Peter. On your way back to your boss,a convicted felon and a convicted sexual assaulter. Tell Trump he only has a few more months of making Trump rich again. And no one from Windsor will use the Ambassador bridge. No one!
This guy is trash , do not give him airtime.
So Hoekstra is just like the rest , he can't answer questions . He is also a liar .
Still trying to say that Canada didn't pay for the bridge because they borrowerd the money . Unfucking believable .
Please do not buy American, including military hardware.
