Exploiting Africa – How China and Europe hunt for the raw materials of the future | DW Documentary
The global race for the African continent‘s coveted raw materials is unscrupulous. The raw material interests of rich nations often trump the rights and needs of the local populations.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, people are being exploited in mines. Chinese traders are illegally buying cobalt, a material Europe needs for its green energy transition. Therefore, Europe buys the cobalt from these illegal traders. The EU now wants to free itself from its dependence on China for raw materials and expand its own local activities. They promise to act more fairly than China – though some say this is not a reasonable promise.
A huge hydrogen project involving Germany is being planned on the south-east coast of Namibia. The local population is also supposed to benefit from it. However, parts of a national park will be destroyed by the billions being spent in the name of green investment. “Why doesn’t Germany sacrifice its own protected parks for green hydrogen?” asks Namibia’s well-known environmental activist Chris Brown.
In the oil-contaminated mangrove forests of the Niger Delta in Nigeria, it becomes clear that Europe is not as climate-friendly as it likes to claim. After all, since the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, numerous European investors have been attempting to discreetly arrange lucrative natural gas deals in the country. Congolese activist Patricia Kashala also complains that Europe gives the impression of acting in an exemplary manner, but in practice often puts its own interests in raw materials above the rights of the local population.

I can easily imagine that the soil be depleted pretty soon at this scale and pace of mining. And what will be left ?? It's nowhere near the "green energy"
Respect to the Europeans helping Africa, hopefully the Europeans get rewarded
Europeans should have the simple rule to pay 10% more than the chineses. Just like that we get all the business, while paying 10% more than the minimum. If chineses raise their pay, we raise ours.
Soon alot of these countries will suddenly need "Democracry" and are breaking "basic human rights".
Dear DW, please come to Indonesia and create documentary to share our stories too, from tin mining in Bangka & Belitung, to nickel in Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua (Raja Ampat!). Many regions have been mined since 1960s and continue to be exploited till barren. The impacts were heartbreaking and depressing for anyone who still care for Indonesia.
Huge population create corruption and undevelop social
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
very informative documentary!
Free Africa
Africa is still a colony of Europe, except it is now financial. All rich people are welcome in US/EU, this is why everyone everywhere who begs, borrow, and rob ends up in US/EU.
Very interesting. Very nice of the Europeans, who have been exploiting and enslaving Africa for centuries is now concern about the welfare of African people. Is this credible at all?
Propaganda piece 😂
Why didn't you guys invest before china??
One coloniser justifying that he is better than the other coloniser
Love how DW avoided all aspects of colonialism, Bravo 👏
What a shame!
Not one single video about Israel's genocide of the Palestinians…
👎🏻
What a joke 🤡
The Europeans started all these and now China is continuing. Posterity will meet them one by one
That's enough Europe exploiting Africa
The issue is leadership. WHERE IS THE PRESIDENT while his citizens are being opressed by the Chinese. Citizens alone cannot fight the Chinese. Where is the PRESIDENT and leadership in general????????
10:15 the audacity of that liar. France is enslaving Africa for hundreds of years, and they still do it now through modern methods, and this lady says with a straight face that China is bad. It's like wanting exclusive enslaving rights and crying when others want a piece of the pie.
Africa is a very interesting continent for two reasons: 1. Their governments and stakeholders are very much happy to take money from outside of the continents. 2. When these outsiders interfere in their affairs they cry imperialism, colonialism, and every other ism.
There are three types of ignorant people in Africa : 1. The ignorant and poor, 2. The ignorant and rich, and 3 the half-ignorant and but contented.
In each case, these three sets of people make the majority of Africa. It is unfortunate, but reality is what it is.
Anasema kasongo ama 😂😂
Africa leaders don't care about there people..the problem is not the enemy outside that's dangerous its the enemy within Africa leaders
When the elephants are fighting the grass gets trampled. I need to be careful not to become the grass. – great quote from the interview in the intro
Two things is not Europe but some European countries, becuse we are in the same continent and in the same “union” don’t mean we are the same or we support the EU and its crimes. Also the big European players Germany uk France the Netherlands etc don’t care about human rights and the environment it’s simple propaganda in reality this countries are responsible for wars, pollution and modern slavery, they simple created a system to make it legal or use others to do the “masters” that’s why EU it’s a joke and most of us Europeans we want free from this union.
europe and US have stole from every country in the world and give lectures on human rights its hypocrisy 's epitome
31:25 India and Africa are the elephants in the global room — massive in potential, but still underestimated, even by themselves 😂
African Union is missing in action.
Now EU talk about justice ,law and moral with Africa to exploit resouce before hand talk about debt trap China to Africa 😂😂😅😅
This is just as much bullshtt as all the news telling you america was abusing chinese kids in workshops. If these kids had jobs and family and food, they would go do something else!!! These illegal mining jobs provide them food for people that would otherwise starve. More illegal mining jobs!!! MORE!!! If these poor kids have to chose between a mining job with fresh air pumped down innto the holes, they choose the job with fresh air, driving the jobs with no fresh air out of buisness.
Mans in the middle of a jungle mining rare earths by hand recording himself with a smartphone. The world is now a strange place.
Also I don't think it matters who these people are selling cobalt to. The price is always going to be low until the miners organize themselves. If they were selling to a US or European purchaser the price would be just as low.
The answer to these kinds of practices is unionization among the DRC miners.
Also the Chinese purchaser is there to purchase and refine the cobalt so that western companies can use it without having to explain why they are using exploitative trade practices. "Oh we were unaware of this cobalts origin, as such we have no comment regarding these claims".
Any western democracy would glad to tap to the cobalt source, while providing decent conditions for workers.
So all must ask why Congolese government doesnt want it.
I think they said “ Africa is poor “ but no one wants to leave
And yet, Africa won't exploit themselves to enrich themselves. Smh
Excellent documentary, which everyone who is unfamiliar with the history of the African countries showcased, should watch.
People think of Africa is one country. It is a continent of many countries Every single country is worse than the other full of corruption if you have the resources and you should be able to set the price it is ridiculous to think the way these people come and take advantage of you and you let them
The West plundered Africa for centuries and they never complained. Now that China is out-competing them in the scramble for Africa, they want to be whistleblowers? SMH. Hypocrisy
Well, as we can see, Africans can't develop any reasonable economic stability. So many years after regaining the independence, Africa still hasn't rejuvenated in any way due to ethnic conflicts, corruption, etc. It is better to exploit it for the benefit of Europeans and others than to leave it.
Be keen on how the name refferal on Europe. Just fill in the gaps on biggest and powerful country of current century yet China a country that was nothing much in 1970's is mentioned due to back then poverty of food and power among others, now they are their feet a big US competitor from less . WOW be wear of those in the shade…………………
Someone is made their not the one controlling.
0:40 its because your own leaders and politicians have sold you to these foreigners. lol blame your own people and start getting to the core
Its soo funny all world mining making stuff working jobs and in the end making same digital numbers on computer thet eur usd jeane printed in the first place 😅😂
The companies are owned by the Chinese, and Caterpillar supplies the machinery. So these partners want to pretend they know the implications of all these activities. Even DW is making money out of this exposure on YouTube
This channel is by far the best I've come across.keep up the good work.
