Cool ✌️
In Europe, such coins can only be sold as "originals" to American tourists for €20.
Any semi-educated European would know that if this coin were an original, it would have been in a museum for at least 500 years and not for sale.
Great video again Gabe ! 😊❤🇧🇦🗻🏔⛰
There were quarries there were at the Sicilian expedition during the Peloponnesian war between Athenians ,Spartans and their allies Athenians were defeated in Syracuse ship battle and turned captured as slaves in these quarries where you visited
You have visited many ancient sites, I’m just wondering what is your opinion about the modern sculptures that seem to fit perfectly in that environment in terms of style, do you feel they are an addition to the location or maybe out of place except that they of course look beautiful there.
Another point is that this historical sight remains fortunately and strangely enough free of graffiti considering the fact that it is very common in the cities there. It seems that apparently these places are respected after all.
We are driving past at 8:05 in the blue renault 😂😂
After the fall of the Roman Empire, much of the Romans' knowledge was lost.
As a European, I find it deeply shameful that Europe had to laboriously acquire this knowledge again in the early Middle Ages.
🙂❤👍
Syracuse was the most harsh city in antiquity. Always ruled by tyrrants.
36:19 Fascinating area.
Really interesting story about the faux coin, it looks nice and cool to have a replica…and the Greek Influence. Full circle moment. Thank you for the vlog, history, lots of things to read up on wiki that I can’t wait to read up on!
👍
Hi Gabriel, I am Greek and athough I do not speak ancient Greek (of course I can understand some 2000 year old phrases) I can read ΣΥΡΑ… ΣΙ.. on the original coin which is SYRA…SI.. so it probably read syracousis or something similar, not 10 ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ – 10 drachma. Its very satisfying to be able to read what your ancestors wrote 2-3 thousant years ago with no particular effort. Keep up the good work, safe travels my friend!
The statue at 19:13 represents the Greek mythological persona Icarus (Ikaros), son of Daedalus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icarus)
👍👍👍
06:20 yikes Gabe walking with back to oncoming traffic. I might switch to other side.
A very Fascinating video!! Thank you so very much Gabriel!!
Did you not visit the amazing Temple of Athena? My fav place

The most ancient part of the city of Syracuse is the island of Ortigia or more properly Ortygia ΟΡΤΥΓΙΑ later the city expanded to mainland Sicily first including Acradina and later expanding with Neapolis, Tyche and Epipolae.
Siracusa was the largest Greek city in Classical antiquity, largest than Athens, only later in the Hellenistic Era Alexandria of Egypt would surpass Syracuse and become the largest Greek City at the time. The 8th BCE Colonisation was probably the last made by the Greeks not the first, there was a long interaction between Sicily and the Aegean, there were certainly Mycenaean settlements and if you visit museums in Sicily you will see a lot of Mycenaean findings from Beehive/Tholos Tombs etc. apart from that the Minoans had a colony in Sicily close to Agrigento(Akragas) known as Minoa and later as Eraclea Minoa. There are also many findings that show the relation and interaction of the Bronze Age and Late Neolithic Sicilians with the Aegean Cultures.
I remember the video when you purchased the coin. You knew then odds are it was a fake / replica but still worth buying as a nice keepsake souvenir… which it obviously is. The Syracusian DecaDrachma is highly sought after & valued due to the fine craftsmanship. There were two dye makers & that might be the signature of one up top
wow
Beautiful place Gabe…and you listen to the Cocteau Twins..am double impressed, 🎉🎉
Thanks for sharing the story about Alexander the Great and I would like to add another story about Alexander the Great when he and his undefeated army reached the Indian subcontinent there was a small kingdom whose king was Porus and as you mentioned Alexander the Great sent his messenger to the court of King Porus either to surrender or be defeated and subdued in a fight so King Porus and his army were defeated in the fight by Alexander the Great and his army and after that King Porus was taken a captive and brought in front of Alexander the Great and Alexander the Great asked King Porus "How would you like to be treated ?" King Porus replied, "I would like to be treated a King treats another King.." Alexander the Great was so much impressed by King Porus's reply that he immediately ordered his army to release King Porus from captivity and after that Alexander the Great also returned King Porus's kingdom to him despite the fact that King Porus was defeated…
Super interesting!
The largest percentage of Italians are essentially descendants of the ancient Greeks. Needless to mention the hundreds of villages and cities that still have Greek names today. Even Rome was founded and named by descendants of Arcadian kings!
When leaving the railway station, should have gone left and not right, shorter more pleasant walk!
Nice, greetings from Pserimos
Looks like Greece
