A Kelowna, B.C., family recently had a disappointing experience with an Airbnb rental in Langley, B.C. According to the family, the property was not at all as advertised and appeared to be abandoned. Jeannine Little, who stayed at the rental, reported seeing trenches in front of the house, peeling paint, and a lack of furnishings inside.
When Global News attempted to contact the Airbnb host for comment, they were met with silence as the host refused to take their calls. Following the negative feedback from the family, the listing for the rental has been taken down from the site.
This incident serves as a reminder to travelers to always do their due diligence and thoroughly research any rental properties before booking on sites like Airbnb. In the age of online accommodations, it is crucial for consumers to be cautious and ensure that the property they are considering matches the description and photos provided.
While Airbnb can offer unique and budget-friendly lodging options, instances like this one highlight the importance of being vigilant and proactive when it comes to booking accommodations. The family’s experience in Langley is a cautionary tale for others to always verify the legitimacy and quality of rental properties before making a reservation.

There's no way I would have slept in those beds.
I strongly advise against trusting Airbnb reviews. We had a terrifying experience with a rental in Ucluelet, BC. The homeowner lunged at me, intending to hit me, until he remembered my husband was packing up the vehicle. You can never predict the mental state of the private individuals you rent from. Airbnb offered no immediate support, and it took over a week to resolve the situation and get our money back. Despite leaving a detailed and honest review, Airbnb did not post it, and the property still shows a 4.8-star rating.
Airbnb's only priority is protecting their income stream; they do not care about the renters and will provide false reviews. I will never use Airbnb again.
Our experience highlights the risks of renting from private individuals. The lack of immediate support from Airbnb was distressing and unacceptable. Even after explaining the situation multiple times, it took more than a week to get a resolution. This incident has completely eroded our trust in Airbnb. Renters should be aware of the potential dangers and the platform's failure to address serious issues promptly.
Me too
We have used Airbnb for many years and love it. We always choose 'super host' and we always read the reviews and leave feedback.
Aww, poor babies.
" DUH" 😑 same as dating 👈 never trust pictures 😑🙏👎🏻
I kinda dislike airbnb but its a neccessary evil in rural places.
They abused investor money to drive out small hospitality establishments and just like every other sibacription model their service suffers when they actually need to profit. Who knows where we go from here?
Airbnb is trash
Hotels are legit business who are inspected, controlled, pay taxes and employ people. Better for you, better for the economy, better for everyone. Risk free!
Hee hee…. this is becoming the norm folks….the airbnb phenomenon is over….everybody cashes in with their spare hovels…somebody gets burned. Write off the cash…..take it as a life lesson.
Air BNBis a scam nowdays.
That's what you get for trying to save a buck – a family could be living in the home as their own residence, but instead the city of Langley lets property investors defraud AirBnB customers and deny housing needed for local families, all at the same time.
Say that again.Dissapointing.
You take the good, you take the bad, and there you have, the facts of life.
This happened to us several times. Especially with Airbnbs in Europe!!
The new airbnb rules are the government punishing it's slaves (I ment citizens) for mistakes they have made
It's awesome some places are banning short term rentals!
Airbnb needs to be held responsible totally
I watched this segment in disbelief as this was the same Airbnb booked by family members for their wedding almost 2 years ago. Eight months after they had booked another large Airbnb home on acreage (there was a shortage of available venues due to Covid) and just months before their wedding, the host cancelled their booking as he had been found to be violating local bylaws. They scrambled and found this home. They had some concerns but were told it had just been bought and the owner wanted to go after the wedding business and work/upgrades were promised to be completed in time for their wedding. They drove to the home in between and were reassured the work would be completed but when they arrived the night before their wedding it was a disaster. The promised work was not done, nothing was as in pictures shown in listing inside or out and there were HUGE safety issues. The yard was overgrown with dead grass/plants, there were numerous wasp nests, a concrete reflecting pool in the front was half empty with stagnant water. They were heartbroken and luckily friends of a family member stepped up and offered their beautiful backyard. Less than those 24 hours before the wedding, the caterer, rental company, marriage commissioner, guests etc. had to be called and advised of a venue change. Given the new rules they are operating more illegally than even before and hopefully they and others operating in a similar shady fashion will be shut down and also fined accordingly. Maybe CRA needs to check some of these short term rentals to see if income from rentals has been reported?
who is this Karen? One review said 'awful'?
This is why I stay in clean, safe hotels. Why stay in strangers homes?
She ignored the bad review. Sounds like she didn't do her due diligence.
